A leg fragment of a copper alloy vessel dating to the post medieval period, c. AD 1450-1600. The object is D-shaped in cross section and broadly rectilinear in form, tapering to a blunt rectangular edge. It is broken at the point where the leg would have joined the body and a small amount of the body of the vessel survives attached to the leg at this point. It has five marked ribs on the surface, and a slight fetlock, after which point it tapers to the more rectilinear terminal. It is slightly convex on the inner surface. There is some pitting on the underside surface of the leg, b…

Three fragments of two different ceramic vessels dating to the Roman period, c. AD 100-250. Two of the fragments originate from the same fineware vessel, although they do not align with one another. They are both rim sherds from a wheel thrown vessel with a marked flange at the rim. They are both formed of a consistent mid grey fabric, with abundant dark blue grey grog inclusions. While well and consistently fired, the interior of the fabric is a lighter buff colour. One of these fragments (sherd 2) bears a rectilinear incision which may be the impression of a thickened finger or t…

Two fragments of two different ceramic vessels dating to the Roman period, c. AD 100-250. Sherd 1 is a fine pale grey fabric with large darker grey brown grog and brighter white, probably flint inclusions and is somewhat micaceous. It comes from a wheelthrown vessel, and preserves a tiny part of the outward flaring rim. The vessel profile is closed in spite of the flared rim, and the vessel itself seems to have been a small form of jar. The vessel was consistently fired and has a slender orange core as a result of oxidisation. It is probably a form of Savernake ware. It is 46.5mm l…

A fragment from a copper-alloy cauldron or skillet leg of late medieval to post-medieval date (AD 1400-1700).  The fragment is broadly hexagonal and D-shaped in cross section with a flat reverse and convex front. One of the edges appear to have been broken away from the rest of the vesssel and the other surface is rounded. There is a single moulded rib which extends transversely across the convex surface at its current widest point. Measurements: 23 mm in length, 25 mm in width and 29.74 g in weight

A Post Medieval tin alloy token of James II (AD 1685-1688), dating to 1688. An "American plantations token", uncertain type. cf. examples published by Newman (1964: plate LVI). Such tokens were valued at one 24th of a Spanish real, or one and a half farthings. Minted in the closing months of James II's reign and intended for use in the colonies, it is doubtful that the tokens were ever officially authorised for circulation and there is no evidence they ever circulated in North America (Newman 1964: 324).

A post medieval copper alloy token dating to the post medieval to modern period, c. AD 1750-1850. The token is badly worn on both sides, although the obverse preserves a triangle within a heart design while the reverse probably depicts two crowned hearts. The obverse bears the name "GEORGINA" or "GEORGIA" while the reverse incorporates the letters EXILE. Millmore (2015) describes the production of copper alloy tokens by individuals due to be transported as tokens of affection and fidelity, which often incorporated both female names and a reference to exile. Measuremen…

A cast copper alloy toilet implement, possibly a spatula or nail file, dating to the Roman period, c. AD 300-410. The object consists of a hemispherical shaped flattened blade, the straighter side of which has a serrated edge, the other side of which is smooth and curving. The end is slightly broken, but does appear to have been a sharp triangular point, creating an asymmetrical appearance at the terminal. This area has also been bent upwards, probably post deposition. The blade is attached to a flattened cylindrical handle, which ends in a circular attachment loop. Both the blade and…

A fragment of an early medieval copper alloy buckle, dating to c. AD 1000-1200. The fragment comprises part of the buckle frame, namely an offset bar, which extends from the jaws of a zoomorphic head in the form of a dog. The bar is cylindrical in shape and tapers to the break, possibly from being refashioned after breaking. The dog's head is streamlined, with large pointed oval shaped eyes and the ears pinned back against the skull as though in flight. The maw of the dog is curving and its muzzle is emphasised and upturned. There is an indentation behind the ears which seems to…
