A cast copper alloy pot leg dating to the post medieval period, c. 1500-1750. The object is D-shaped in cross section and broadly rectilinear in form, tapering to a blunt edge. There is an old break at the point where the leg would have once joined the body of the vessel. No part of the body of the vessel survives adhered to this. There are a series of three narrow and notably tall ribs. This example is representative of Butler et al (2009, 4)'s Type C, which they consider as in use by the 16th century and "almost universal" by the 17th century. Measurements: 36.9mm length,…

Object type: PLAQUE
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: South Gloucestershire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A fragment of a copper alloy plaque, possibly memorial or ecclesiastical in nature, dating to the medieval period, c. AD 1300-1500. The fragment is now an irregular shape, with a right angle on one side and a tapering curve between these points, slightly akin to a capital D shape. There are breaks on all sides, suggesting that this fragment would have been surrounded by the larger body of the plaque. This supposition is supported by the positioning of the black letter text on the upper surface, which appears to begin outside this fragement and to continue elsewhere. There is a c…

Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: South Gloucestershire

A rowel fragment of late medieval to post medieval copper alloy spur, dating to c. AD 1400-1600. Only the rowel of the spur survives. The rowel is formed in the shape of a five pointed star, with all five points relatively equal in size and girth. At its centre is a circular aperture, originally for attachment to the spur itself. It is convex on both sides, with the points of the stars raised along the centre line and tapering to their sharp edges. Rowel spurs were introduced in the 13th century, and remained in use until at least the 17th century. The relatively large siz…

A largely complete medieval copper alloy zoomorphic harness pendant dating to c. AD 1200-1400. The obverse face is designed in the form of a facing cow or bull's head. The pellet eyes and the muzzle are raised; within the snout are punched circles representing nostrils. At the upper edge of the pendant are four protrusions; the two central protrusions, which are more pointed in shape, intended to represent horns, and they are flanked by smaller more rounded protrusions with hollow centres, representing the ears. The cheeks are lowered compared to the moulded features described abov…
