Object type: BROOCH
Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL
County: Somerset
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
An incomplete silver and copper alloy early medieval disc brooch, dating to the 9th century, c. AD 800-900.
The elaborately decorated front plate of the brooch survives, but the pin is missing and was not recovered in the ensuing excavation of the findspot. There is some damage to the copper alloy backing of the silver, and a small area appears as openwork due to the absence of the backing in this area. In this area, two of the dome headed riveted bosses which are part of the decorative scheme, are also missing. It is circular in plan and flattened in cross section. The majority of th…

The frame is complete but the pin is missing. The object has a single loop D-shaped frame which is pointed oval in cross-section. The buckle loop is enlarged and tapers towards the strap bar which is off-set and narrowed, and cylindrical in shape. At each of the loop terminals which adjoin the strap bar is a stylised beast's head, possibly that of a canine. The beast has an elongated muzzle with clearly demarcated jowls, and a central spine to the nose. It has large eyes w…

The front plate survives, with breaks at both terminals. The upper break is diagonal and the lower break is horizontal, both cut across the ring and dot designs with which the object is decorated. It is flattened in cross section and tongue shaped in plan, tapering to a narrow rectangular tongue. The otuer perimeter is decorated with a series of ring and dot designs, which merge into a single ring and dot line continuing to the break.

A copper alloy zoomorphic strap end dating to the Early Medieval period, c. AD 750 - 950.
The object is sub rectangular in shape, with an angled tapering terminal. There are two broadly circular rivets in position at the open attachment end. The reverse is plain and undecorated. On the outward face is an elaborate Trewhiddle style decorative scheme composed of what appear to be two entwined beasts, their heads rounded in shape and almost feline, with an impression of nose and mouth visible on one and worn away on the other, before joining elongated rectilinear necks which appear to…

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
An incomplete cast copper alloy strap end dating from the Early Medieval period, c. AD 750-900.
The strap end is flattened in cross section and an elongated pointed oval in plan, with breaks particularly visible at the attachment end. The break has removed the area where the attachment rivets would once have been placed. It is decorated with a zoomorphic motif, the clearest parts of which depict two curved ears which join at either end of a deep curving V-shape. This line continues via a small cruciform shape before ending in the centre of what seems to be a long snout which is p…

An incomplete Early-Medieval (Anglo-Scandinavian) cast copper-alloy stirrup-strap mount (1000-1100). Only the upper portion, which appears to be approximately one half of the original artefact, survives.
The surviving portion of the mount is sub-triangular in plan. The top of the mount is rounded and has a circular attachment loop in its centre that is now filled in with the remains of a copper alloy rivet that is sheer with the reverse of the plate and slightly concave from the front of the plate. Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
An incomplete copper alloy strap end from the Early Medieval period, dating to c. AD 750-1100.
The object is wedge shaped, tapering from its broad attachment end to a slender point. It is D-shaped in cross section, although at the attachment end the upper surface is missing, resulting in a flat appearance. A series of 12 grooves run across the object horizontally, before a possibly zoomorphic design involving two circles (possibly nostrils?) at the object's tip. There is a shallow impression running vertically along the length of the reverse, but it is otherwise undecorated.

Object type: MOUNT
Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL
County: Somerset
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A complete copper alloy box or harness mount, possibly of later Early Medieval date (940-1066 AD).
The mount is quatrefoil in shape, with four trefoil shaped pierced lobes set around a circular base. This is concave on the reverse, creating a depression approximately 14mm deep. The centre of the mount is formed into the head of a beast, possibly a mastiff type dog or bear, but also possibly reminiscent of the semi-feline beasts seen on Borre metalwork. This latter suggestion is given due to the exaggeratedly large eyes, measuring 9.4mm across, which are almond shaped. A similar exa…

The object is cast, moulded in high relief into a three-dimensional representation of an animal's head, with additional details engraved into the surface. The animal has pronounced rounded ears in front of which are a pair bulging hemispherical eyes, accentuated by a deeply engraved groove and separated by a small rectangular boss. Below the eyes the head narrows markedly into the snout, which is sub-rectangular in cross section and tapers tow…

A worn late early-medieval copper-alloy strap-end of Thomas's Class E, Type 5, culturally Carolingian (c. 10th century).
The strap-end is tongue shaped, with a recessed attachment end with two circular perforations, and terminating in a broad curve at the other end. The recessed step at the attachment end is on the reverse, with a 'ledge' below it; the strap-end thins from this point towards the terminal, attaining a constant thickness after a gradual thinning. The front of the strap end is decorated, cast in relief, with a floriated cross dominating the field within a raised borde…

A late early-medieval copper-alloy openwork stirrup-strap mount, dating to c. AD 1000-1100. The mount is broadly sub-triangular, 50.1 mm long and 30.3 mm wide at the maximum, with a rounded apex flanked by two extremely abraded knops. Just below the mid-point the plate of the mount narrows into a waist, 25.0 mm wide, with a small semicircular depression on each side. The mount is generally flat, c. 2.1 mm thick, but thicknening at the centre into a raised boss 3.4 mm thick, although due to its highly abraded surface little decoration is visible. A sub-rectangular flange expands 6.7mm …
