Object type: BUCKLE
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Hampshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A post-medieval copper-alloy double looped oval buckle, dating to c. AD 1550-1650, incomplete insofar as it is missing its pin.
The frame is decorated with bilobed knops at two symmetrical points on the outer edge of each loop. There should be a pair of rosettes positioned at the centre of the outer edge of each loop but the design is very worn. Lobed knops protrude at either end of the pin bar, which is narrowed and slightly bent inwards. The frame is bent in profile, most likely from damage rather than use.
Measurements: 49 mm in length, 35 mm in widt…

Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Hampshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A distorted copper-alloy, symmetrical, double-loop buckle, of post-medieval date (c. 16th century), incomplete only insofar as it is missing its pin.
The buckle consists of a pair of oval loops. A small rounded knop is present either end of the central pin bar. There is a moulded rose at the centre of each outer edge, perhaps with six petals on each rose. The reverse is flat and undecorated. The frame is angled in profile with one of the loops having been bent upwards; it is unclear how much of this is as a result of use and how much post-depositiona…

Object type: STRAP FITTING
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Hampshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
An incomplete medieval copper alloy strap fitting dating to AD 1325-1400.
The strap end is formed from a single sheet of copper alloy which has been folded 180 degrees. It would have been secured with a single circular rivet, which remains present although its point has been damaged and is now missing.
Egan and Pritchard (1991: 129) present a series of examples of this simple form, including their no. 594 which is similar. This is dated to their ceramic phase 10, which is dated from AD 1325-75.
Measurements: 29.9mm length, 12.4mm width, 1.3mm thickness, weight 1.80g.

Object type: VESSEL
Broad period: ROMAN
County: Hampshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A fragment of a wheel thrown coarseware closed form vessel, probably a jar, dating to the Roman period, c. AD 200-400.
The fragment is a base fragment, namely a foot ring, and is markedly unfinished on its flattened underside. It has a thickly curving rounded edge to the base, and above this are two cordons with a deep channel between them, in which further slender incised lines lie. It is made of a pale buff oxidised fabric, which nonetheless maintains a slender strip of grey at its core. It is micaceous, with a slightly sandy texture on the inner surface. There are traces of a…

Object type: BROOCH
Broad period: ROMAN
County: Hampshire
Workflow stage: Published
An incomplete copper alloy initial T-shaped brooch of T135 dating to the Roman period, c. AD 50-150.
The wings and upper part of the bow survive. The wings are cylindrical in shape, with an outer layer of copper alloy wrapped around the internal hinge bar. This is visible in the damaged terminal of the left wing, and missing in the damaged terminal of the right wing. At the centre is a v-shaped notch where the hinge would have originally been placed. The bow rises at a gentle angle from the arms, and is decorated with two horizontal grooves which give it a ribbed appearance and …

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
An incomplete copper alloy composite buckle with forked spacer, dating to the medieval period, c. AD 1300-1400.
A single spacer and part of the single loop frame survives. Around 30% of the circumference of the loop survives. It is triangular in cross section. The spacer is long and tapers to a sharp point, and is trapezoid in section. There is a marked groove on the rectangular point at which the spacer joins the frame, which appears decorative. There is a slight shine to the now green copper alloy surface which suggests it may have once been silvered.

Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Hampshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A post medieval copper alloy pendant, dating to c. AD 1600-1800.
The object is circular in shape and flattened in cross section, slightly irregularly angled due to the large suspension hole which is pierced into its upper centre. This aperture is at the centre of the design inscribed onto the surface, which is a many rayed sunburst. Traces of gilding survive on the outer surface. The reverse is plain and undecorated but also retains traces of gilding.

A copper alloy finger ring dating to the Roman period, c. AD 200-400, of Henig Type VIII.
The ring is composed of a shaped, keeled thin sheet of copper alloy which is formed into a circular hoop, flattened in cross section, the line of which is cut across by the large rectangular bezel. Atop the bezel at its centre is an inset bead of green glass. The edges of the rectangular bezel are emphasised by vertical incised lines which form borders before the hoop begins to taper and sweep downwards.
The shape of this finger ring and the placement of the glass bead is reminiscent o…
