An incomplete medieval copper-alloy buckle plate (c. AD 1200-1400), now folded round on itself into a squashed loop. It is uncertain whether this folding was for a particular purpose, perhaps for reuse as a thimble, of if it was more accidental. Around half of the rectangular plate survives, having been broken a the weak point where is would have been folded and recessed for a buckle frame, with a slot for the pin; one of the tabs survives. At the terminal there are two circular perforations, one towards each corner. The external surface of the plate is decorated with a punc…

An incomplete copper alloy buckle dating to the post medieval period, c. AD 1500-1700. The buckle frame is damaged, with c. 30% missing. The central bar survives in good condition as does the remainder of the bar. It is double looped, with each loop D-shaped. There are two protruding knops at each end of the central bar, and a further two knops placed at the point at which the buckle frame turns from horizontal to vertical. The tight rounded nature of the loops suggests a relationship to earlier "spectacle" style buckles while the addition of the knops is character…

It is double looped, with small rounded knops on either side of the flattened rectangular central bar. There is also a surviving trefoil knop at the centre of the verticle sides of the frame. These are all decorated with raised scalloped decoraiton. The pin is formed of a single tapering strip of metal wrapped around the central bar. A similar and complete example is DEV-5A6402. An incomplete copper alloy annular buckle dating to the late medieval period, c. AD 1400-1650. The buckle frame survives, the pin is missing. It is double looped, with both loops crescentic in shape. The frame is rectangular in cross section with a bevelled inner edge. The central bar is trapezoidal in cross section. It has two subtle depressions in the outer edge of the right hand side of the frame, which may be caused by post depositional damage or may be deliberate.  Whitehead (2002: 45) no. 256 is similar, and is dated from the late medieval to post medieval p…

An incomplete copper alloy buckle of late medieval to post medieval date, c. AD 1350-1550. The buckle frame survives, the pin is missing. It is single looped, and trapezoidal in shape, with an irregular outer edge created by the outer vertical side gently curving inwards before returning to its original position and rejoining the opposing horizontal sides. There are multiple small incisded grooves around the buckle frame, which are positioned at a diagonal angle away from the centre. Whitehead (1996: 30) illustrates a similar example, no. 170, which he dates to AD 1350-1550…

An incomplete copper alloy buckle of post medieval date, c. AD 1650-1720. The buckle is double looped and rectangular in shape. It is missing the drilled spindle and pin. It is D-shaped in section. The two loops are both bilobal in shape, with this created by the thickening at the centre of the vertical sides of the frame. Whitehead (1996: no. 2651) describes similar examples from the post-medieval period, and gives a date of 1690-1720. Measurements: 31.1mm length, 21.2mm width, 2.8mm thickness, weight 5.01g

An incomplete copper alloy buckle of the "spectacle" type dating to the medieval period, c. AD 1350-1500. The pin is missing, but the frame survives. The frame is double looped, with two pointed oval loops which are convex in cross section. The frame is noticeably pointed at the upper and lower terminals, emphasising the pointed oval shape of the loops. There is also a thickening on the left hand loop to give the appearance of a pointed quasi-knop. NCL-B49FBD is similar, as is CAM-9CE780. Whitehead (2003) illustrates a similar buckle (page 53, No.294) which he dates to c.135…

An incomplete copper alloy single loop buckle with forked spacers for the attachment of a composite rigid plate dating to the medieval period, AD 1325-1375. Only the frame and the forked spacer are present. The frame is oval in shape and flattened in cross section. It has a decorative triangular knop, although the point of the triangle is now worn. The spacers are rectangular in cross section, and taper to their breaks, which have removed the original sharp points. The point at which they join the frame is marked by a cross bar with a small drop shaped aperture just prior to the p…

A Medieval to Post-Medieval copper alloy annular buckle with a central bar, probably dating to c. AD 1450-1600. The frame and bar are rectangualr in cross section, the outer edge of the frame is case into the form of a five-petaled rose. Dimensions: length 28.0mm; width 26.0mm; thickness 3.0mm; weight 5.71g. A similar buckle was excavated in Norwich in a context dated to AD 1561-1690 (Margeson 1993: 29, no. 157), however, they are often assumed to be earlier based on their decoration, cf. PUBLIC-655D05, HAMP-AD9215.

A Medieval copper alloy buckle with integral forked spacer, probably dating to c. AD 1300-1450. The buckle frame has a single oval loop, with a D-shaped cross section. The outer edge of the loop is expanded into a small point, with two prongs expanding from the opposite edge. A simple wire pin is wrapped around the frame in the space between the prongs. The composite plate survives in situ, consisting of two rectangular sheets of copper alloy soldered onto the spacer.
