Object type: AXEHEAD
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Nottinghamshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A complete axe head of late neolithic date (c. 3000 - 2000 BC), hand knapped and pecked from a dark dense, probably igneous rock, although the original surface is hard to determine due to the abundance of peck marks.  The axe is broadly a pointed oval in plan and is sub-oval (humped) in cross section. In plan the axe head tapers from a rounded cutting edge to a blunted point at the butt. In profile it is thickest at the mid-point and tapers towards the butt and cutting edge. The cutting edge is well formed, mostly intact except for small chips; the surface of the axe is …

Object type: SEAL MATRIX
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Leicestershire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An incomplete seal matrix, probably of post medieval to modern date (c. AD 1750 - 1900). The object is of the pedestal type. The matrix itself is in the shape of a heater shield, the pedestal is swept back from this to form an irregular hexagonal shaft which terminates in a blunt, apparently unbroken stub. On either side of this stub is a circular indent with a central raised dot, indicating that some kind of hinge mechanism was attached at this point. So the surviving element is probably part of a fob arrangement, possibly attached to a gentleman's watch chain. The pedes…

Object type: SPINDLE WHORL
Broad period: IRON AGE
County: Derbyshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A stone spindle whorl or loom weight, probably of Iron Age to Roman date, (c. 300 BC - AD 400). The object is a cylindrical disc carefully formed from a fine-grained sandstone. It has a very neatly drilled central perforation, 4.5 mm diameter. Both faces are flat and smooth, without decoration. There is some chipping but the object is generally in good condition. Spindle whorls  are very difficult to date precisely without other evidence (such as pottery) as the general form was in use for a long period. However this spindle whorl closely resembles, in material and form, oth…

An incomplete polished stone axehead of Neolithic date (c 4000-2100 BC). The stone has been ground and polished to a smooth finish. The axehead has been broken approximately 77.8mm from the cutting edge, which is symmetrical. The break has occurred at a point where the sides of the axe are still almost parallel, just along from where it would taper to a narrower butt. The cutting edge shows signs of use with a number of small chips along it. The axehead is pointed oval in cross section. The composition of the stone is fairly uniform, a light grey/green in colour, with black specks thr…

A perforated stone implement of Mesolithic to Neolithic date (c 8000 - 2000 BC), possibly a mace head or axe-hammer. It is of a mid-brown, fine grained stone. It is possible the object was fashioned from a water worn pebble or cobble, but it has been extensively worked by pecking and grinding; The object has a trapezoidal plan with one end worked into a blunt axe-like blade, 59.4 mm wide now extensively chipped, the other end is narrower, 44.9 mm, damaged but apparently squarer and blunter. A polished, Neolithic stone axehead (c. 4000 - 2350 BC). The axehead is broadly trapezoidal, with a wide convex cutting edge, quite straight sides tapering to a narrow butt. It is broadly oval in cross section but both edges are faceted. This feature and the material the axe is made from suggest that the axe probably comes from the Great Langdale axe factory (in the Lake District). The cuttiing edge has a series of chips on both faces. there are also a number of large chips out of the butt. A perforated stone object of uncertain date, probably used as a weight. It is circular in plan, with flattened surfaces top and bottom. Edges appear bevelled but it is not clear if this is intentional or the result of wear and damage. The surface has been worked smooth but there are multiple chips and breaks. The surface lacks the very smooth or polished appearance of so-called 'battle axes' or 'maces'. The stone appears to be sedimentary, possibly a fossiliferous limestone. The perforation is 19 mm diameter and well formed, running as a smooth walled cylindrical tube through the o…
