Object type: PEBBLE
Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: Cornwall
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Stone implement, from a baked sedimentary rock, or meta-sediment with quartz veins and mica (musovite) inclusions, which were probably 'recycled' when the rock metamorphosed (Roger Taylor pers comm). The implement is triangular in plan, with a curved, expanded end, and plano-convex in profile and section. The expanded end is flat on one side and curved on the other, which may just be a result of the pebble being shaped by the sand and sea, and not by hand. The sides of the object are damaged, and these appear to be recent, perhaps as a result of being knocked by the plough. This 'waist…

Fragment of a gold bar or ingot, sub-square in plan and lozenge-shaped in profile and section, that has been worked on an anvil and swaged down with a hammer to stretch it out to a thin fine edge on one side. The opposite edge that is parallel has been chiseled off to create a stepped edge and has been separated from another piece. The two other sides, which are more concave in plan, have also broken off a longer strip, may have cracked due to flaws still visible in the metal. There are swage marks on both faces of the fragment which also have cracks within them and evidence of delami…

A fragment of a copper alloy unidentified object of uncertain date. The fragment is D-shaped in cross-section with slightly bevelled edges on both faces. It expands slightly towards one end and is slightly curved in profile. It has a fine green and redish patina and the break across either end is fairly fresh. The object is too incomplete to identify, but the most likely possiblity is a Post Medieval trigger or trigger guard or similar fitting from a musket or similar firearm. Compare SUR-427B01 and DUR-18B995. The tactile nature and smooth curve makes it feel like it was intende…

A copper- alloy possible finger ring, re-used from a fragment of a bracelet of unknown date. The object consists of a copper alloy band, rectangular in cross section with rounded ends bent into a circle so that the ends overlap. The inner end appears to be cut and curves around to a larger moulded band which is decorated with two chevrons and a series of parallel lines before flattening out to the end. The object has a dark-brown patina with traces of copper-alloy corrosion. The object may be a finger ring, possibly re-used from a fragment of a bracelet, probably the terminal. T…

A flint lithic implement, possibly a blade, dating from the Neolithic to Bronze Age period, c. 4000 BC-1800 BC. The blade is narrow and sub-rectangular in plan with a pointed tip. The blade has a serrated edge but the facets and the dorsal face show no signs of a strucked flint apart from a small notch at one end. The serrations could be due to plough damage but the flint seems to show signs of a considered design. The flint is a light - dark grey with patches of orange colouration. Measurements: Length, 37.24mm; Width, 10.51mm; Thickness, 4.35mm; Weight, 1.6g

An opaque light blue glass bead of unknown date, Iron Age to modern, 400 BC - AD 1900. A small light blue wound circular glass bead with a central perforation. The glass contains small bubbles consistant with handmade wound glass beads. The bead was formed on an iron mandrel over a small furnace or similar, by melting glass until flowed onto a rotated rod to form a disc. Small glass beads are common from Late Iron Age, Roman and Early Medieval periods and are difficult to date without context. This was a surface find without any other artefacts found nearby. The …

Fragment of a gold ingot of  of uncertain date, possibly Bronze Age. Rectangular in plan and lozenge-shaped in profile. One end is flattened and flanged having been sheared off with a blunt 'cold' chisel which has caused the end to expand. The opposing end shows similar cold working but also exhibits a worn break. Measurements: 26.6mm long, 10.3mm wide, 1.9mm thick and 6.3g in weight. A cast, copper-alloy, decorated fragment of an unknown object, depicting a wing. It is probably Roman to Post-medieval in date (c. AD 43-1500). It is possible that the fragment is part of a figurine, but could also be part of a dress fastener or brooch. The feathers of the wing are created by a variety of champlevé cells which would have been filled with enamel. It is unclear whether the wing is representative of a type of bird or even perhaps an angel. There are worn breaks at both ends of the object. It is possible that there were attachment poin…

An incomplete crescent shaped copper-alloy object of uncertain date.  Possibly a horse harness fitting such as a fitting from a fly terret. There is a very neat, central, circular, screw-threaded socket hole on the underside of the crescent which possibly suggests a Post-Medieval to Modern date (c. AD 1800-1950) although this is not definitive. The surface is patinated green consistent with copper-alloy corrosion. There are also patches of orange-brown corrosion on one side. The patina could possibly indicate an earlier date than suggseted above. Measurement…

An incomplete perforated object made of stone, possibly a mace head or quern stone dating from the Mesolithic to Medieval periods (c. 9000 BC - AD 1066). The object is crescent shaped in plan with a central perforation which is hourglass in section, indicating that the stone has been worked on both sides. It is probable that the object was sub-circular or sub-oval in plan when complete. It is sub-oval in cross-section.  The stone is light brown-grey in colour with some areas of white, possible quartz, present. Measurements: Length, 70.62mm; Width, 68.44…

A silver finger ring of uncertain date (c. AD 600 - 1900). The finger ring is formed of a single piece of silver wire joined at the shoulder on one side by soldering. The silver wire has a circular cross-section. The ring exhibits a simple slip-knot with a slightly flattened upper surface as the bezel. The finger ring measures 16.19mm in width(13.80mm internal width), is 0.98mm thick and weighs 0.51g. Silver wire rings can be difficult to date and may date from the early medieval to modern. This example bears similarities to LANCUM-972281 (2004T255) rings 2 & 3 from the…

Cordoned rim sherd from a large jar of Roman date (c. 100-300 AD) with a rolled rim and larger applied cordon, immediately beneath it, with a groove between to define the cordons. The sherd is a bright orangey colour throughout and the surfaces have been oxidised. The fabric contains mica, felspar and augite inclusions, which suggests that it is made from gabbroic clay, originating from the Lizard. The clay may have been made more iron-rich in order for the jar to look more like the terracotta colour of the Roman imports at the time. Romano-British in form. Carlyon (1987) illustrates …

Half of the upper stone of a greisen rotary quern, semi-circular in plan and plano-convex in profile and section. The upper surface shows the remains of a central hopper or recess, and a wedge-shaped aperture at one end which was part of the socket for slotting a wooden handle into the stone quern. The handle would have allowed the upper section of the two-part quern to be rotated over the base section, with the grain between the two, so that it was ground into flour. The break beyond the socket, an obvious weak spot, looks more recent as it is not too abraded. The diameter of the …

Large weathered granite lower stone or base of a rotary quern with a central hole for a wooden spindle to hold it to the upper stone of the rotary quern which would have also been perforated centrally. The spindle would have allowed the upper section of the two-part quern to be rotated over the base section, with the grain between the two, so that it was ground into flour. The stone is about 530 mm in diameter and about 100 mm thick at the eye which is 60 mm in diameter and a complete perforation.
