A heavily clipped and worn silver shilling of Charles I (1625-1649), Exeter mint (1643-1646). The coin has been clipped right down to the inner circle so that all the inscriptions are missing, and the obverse of the coin is worn almost flat. The coin has also been bent into an S-shaped profile, perhaps to be used as a 'love token'. The obverse has a crowned bust facing left that appears to be from the outline a large Oxford type bust with X[II] behind the head. The reverse carries a garnished oval shield with the initials C and R on either side of the shield. Spink 3082

A Post-Medieval silver-plated copper alloy contemporary forgery of a silver half crown of Charles I (1625-1649), Tower mint under Parliament, dating from 1643 onwards. The mint mark is the (R) which dates from 1644-1645 and the obverse is similar to the Group III half crowns, Type 3a3, third horseman with a vertical complete sword but the rider obliterated and an oval garnished shield on the reverse, Spink 2778.
