Object type: SEAL MATRIX
Broad period: MEDIEVAL

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A small seal matrix, of probable Medieval dating (1200-1400 AD), featuring decoration of two semi circles, separated at their straight edges by three horizontal dots. It is possible that the slightly larger semi-circle was intended to represent a simplified form of an animal; perhaps a bear or boar. While it is in an overall good state of preservation, the loop appears brittle. From the handle flowing down into the seal matrix itself, the shape changes slightly. Nearer the handle it is more hexagonal, but upon reaching the seal matrix itself, it rounds out into a circular shape. …

An incomplete cast copper alloy late-Medieval "lyre shaped" buckle or strap end dating c.1350-1450. It has a dark grey-green patina (95%), and patches of mid red-brown iron oxide staining (c.5%). The strap end consists of an integral trapezoidal box-chape (187 x 172mm) which terminates with probable "lyre-shaped" openwork frame at the base of the box, of which two arms (one complete, and one near-complete) remain, and these are etched with five discernible grooved lines, (three on the complete arm, and two on the neasr-complete arm). A complete cast copper-alloy double loop annular buckle, from AD c.1350-1650. It is therefore of probable late-Medieval to post-Medieval date. It has a overall dark-grey patina, and it is missing its associated pin. The frame of the buckle is circular in shape, with bevelled sides, and features a cross-bar, which has been soldered onto the underside of the frame. There are two rivets on the cross-bar, c.6mm apart, presumably for attaching the belt onto. It appears to be a jetton associated with the historic Duchy of Gelders, probably dating from the late 14th century and issued by Mathilde de Gueldre (Duchess of Gelders, from 1371 to 1379). The Duchy of Gelders was a historical Duchy, previously a county, in the Holy Roman Empire, located in the Low Countries. A damaged and very worn medieval silver halfpenny or penny of long cross type, not further defined, dating to AD1279-c.1500 (Edward I - Henry VII). The coin is in very poor condition, missing parts of the outer edge and the design almost entirely illegible. The only element of the design which survives is part of the reverse showing a long cross dividing the inscription with pellets in each quarter. The inscriptions are illegible. The diameter of the coin (16 mm) suggests the coin is either a halfpenny of Edward I-III (1279-1351) or a later penny (probably Edward IV onwards). The weig…

A late Medieval to early post-Medieval copper-alloy strap fitting, or hook, in what appears to be the shape of a sword. This design was probably done to allude to its purpose, where it likely constituted part of a post-Medieval sword belt hanger. Most examples recorded by the PAS are mostly made of copper alloy. It looks like a sword; it is tapered at one end, and widens at the other into a hilt. The bottom of the hilt appears to have once been attached to the rest of the piece, but has since broken away from it. The blade itself is decorated with two raised parallel vertica…
