A copper-alloy mount used to suspend a harness pendant. This pendant suspension mount is of Medieval date, c. AD1300-1400. This mount weighs 7.28g. The body of the mount has a length of 55.8mm, width of 8.6mm and thickness of c.3.8mm. It has a sub 'D' shaped cross-section, convexly curved on the upper surface and concave on the reverse. The central panel accounts for 22.8mm of the total length. On the upper surface, to either side of the central panel, a subtle moulded constriction is present. These are bordered to either side by a transverse moulded ridge. These seem only to have had…

A copper-alloy Medieval flat-topped shield shaped mount. This mount weighs 1.93g, has a height of 12.8mm, width of 11.2mm and thickness of 2.3mm. The front of the shield shows no obvious decoration. However, this surface feels lumpy to the touch which may be the worn remains of moulded decoration. Indeed a diagonal shallow recess of c.2.8mm width crosses the shield. This may originally have been filled with enamel to match a true heraldic design or to suggest at such a motif. The reverse surface of the shield is flat and undecorated. An integral rivet shank projects out from the appro…

A copper-alloy Medieval harness mount in the shape of a heraldic shield. The shield has a height of 18.0mm, maximum width of 14.2mm and thickness of 2.7mm. The front surface has deteriorated over time and all that is now visible are four interconnecting incised or moulded depressed lines. These lines may have originally been infilled with enamel however these are now just seen as grooves. One of the lines is set horizontally, 3.6mm down from the top edge of the shield. This line has a length of at least 7.4mm. The three other lines have a length of 2.9mm, are touching the horizontal l…

A copper-alloy Medieval suspension mount with integral stud. The circular body of the stud has a diameter of c.15.83mm and is slightly convex. At the centre of the body a faint flower head can be seen with stalk below and a leaf on either side of the base of the stem. Two lugs project below, at 90 degrees, the circular body and are formed by sheet metal being folded back to rest on the underside of the stud. The lugs are c.6.57mm long, 3.14mm wide and 3.56mm thick. The shaft of the stud, which is probably incomplete, has a current length of 7.02mm and circular cross-section of 3.04mm …

A cast copper-alloy medieval suspension mount. The object is sub-triangular in plan, with triangular terminals. Each terminal has a circular rivet hole and is separated from the rest of the mount by a double collar. The reverse is hollow. There are two suspension loops, each forming a right angle with the mount. Much of the object's original gilding survives. Length 49.5mm, width 19.1mm, thickness 5.21mm and weight 8.4g.

Openwork mount, perhaps from horse harness. In shape it is a little like an urn, with a projecting stem, then a rounded base decorated with incised lines radiating from the junction of base and stem. The upper part has two large circular perforations, 5 mm in diameter, with a transverse groove above and below. Above, the mount is damaged and possibly distorted, but there appears to be a long narrow transverse oval perforation in the centre, and then a straight or slightly incurved top edge which projections slightly to either side. On the reverse are two integral rivets, one large…

Gilded copper-alloy mount, possibly from horse harness. It appears to be incomplete, although the breaks are old and it is difficult to reconstruct its original appearance. At one end of the fragment is a sub-rectangular lobe (8 x 6 mm), decorated with an incised double-strand saltire, with a large tapering integral rivet on the reverse. From this a bar extends at an angle; there is a small stub extending from this which may be the remains of an openwork design. There is what appears to be the stub of a matching bar extending from the sub-rectangular lobe, which would make the desig…

A copper alloy harness pendant suspension mount dating to the thirteenth or fourteenth centuries AD. The pendant is rectangular in shape with a central circular boss. Surrounding the boss, there is decoration comprising stamped annulets. Remnants of gilding are also visible. Two rectangular lugs extend from one end of the pendant which would have originally formed the attachment loop for the pendant. There is no obvious means of fixing the mount to the harness, but there is damage to the edge opposite the lug, and small rivet holes may have been lost. The mount measures 24mm in length…

A copper alloy strap loop probably dating to the later medieval period. It comprises a quatrefoil plate with angular projections. The upper surface of the quatrefoil plate is decorated with a peacock motif in blue, red and possibly white enamel. On the underside the plate there extends a rectangular loop. A flat circular riveted attachment plate extends from the base of the loop. The plate has a length and width of 23mm. The height of the strap loop is 21mm. The strap loop bears some similarity to a possible harness fitting from London illustrated in Clark, 1995, The Medieval Horse and…

A gilded copper alloy harness mount dating to the medieval period, probably thirteenth or fourteenth century. This is a pendant suspension mount from a horse-harness pendant. The mount is very well made and consists of a rectangular plate (11 x 13 mm), which is decorated with four vertical ridges. The ridges are semi-circular in cross-section, and decorated with transverse nicks. In between are three broad V-shaped vertical grooves that retain gilding in good condition. The reverse of the rectangular plate has an integral rivet with burred-over end, which brings the maximum thickness …
