Object type: AMPULLA
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Cambridgeshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An incomplete, broken and distorted Medieval lead ampulla. It is estimated that approximately one quarter of the ampulla, half of the top section, is missing as a result of damage. The other upper quarter has been bent out to the side, causing distortion to the original shape. The lower half (just less than half) of the object is preserved in better condition. One side is decorated with moulded relief. Two semi-circles are visible and fill the lower part of this side. These semi-circles are filled with small lozenges (2.5mm x 2.1mm apex to apex). The lozenges are …

Object type: WEIGHT
Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: Cambridgeshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A lump of lead whose function or use is uncertain. This unidentified object is also of uncertain date. It weighs 42.19g, and currently has a sub-spherical to sub-cuboid form. Lead is a heavy but soft metal and it is therefore more probable that this artefact started as a sphere and has deformed to gain flatter sides under its own weight. Only one of the surfaces appears markedly different to the others. This has a depressed slot around less than half of the circumference. The slot has a width of 1.9mm and depth of 0.7mm. The diameter of the lump, measured along the axi…

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An incomplete lead, or lead alloy, button of 18th century AD date, of a type often made in silver or cut steel (see Bailey, G. 2004 p.65). Compare with PAS record CAM-7EE27C, which has almost identical decoration. This complete object weighs 21.03g. It has a circular shape with diameter of 26.5mm. In profile the button's head has a semi-circular form, convexly domed to the front with a flat reverse. The current maximum thickness over the button is 7.5mm. However, this was originally slightly greater due to damage to the central decorative boss.&n…

A lead artefact of uncertain date. This is probably a weight to weigh goods with but may have been used as a small plumb-bob or weight to tension a cord or material instead. Weight is 22.63g (0.80oz) and length is 31.5mm. The cross-section appears to be circular but close inspection shows the sides to be subtly faceted. Some of the facets are much more subtle than others which frustrates counting the total number. At the wider end the diameter is c.9.4mm. c.3.7mm from this terminal the diameter has flared out to 15.2mm. It then contracts gradually to 8.6mm diameter c.2.4mm before the o…

A conical lead weight of uncertain date. This artefact weighs 54.19g (1.91oz) and has a height of 20.6mm. In profile the weight has a trapezoidal shape and a sub-circular cross-section of c.23.0mm diameter at the base tapering to 17.8mm at the top. A perforation passes through the approximate centre of the weight on the height axis. At the flat base of the weight this opening is oval 4.7mm x 3.9mm. At the irregular but mostly flat top the opening is not open but blocked, possibly with a mix of pale brown soil and or rusted iron, possibly with some lead from the slig…

A biconical lead weight. Weights of this form are generally thought to be Roman but the date is uncertain as these can be found on multi-period sites. The weight has a biconical profile and sub-circular shape when viewed from above or below, probably originally circular but now miss-shapen. The remains of an iron attachment loop or some other means of suspension are present in the miss-shapen apex end. In its current condition the weight has a height of 35.2mm including the iron remains. The original diameter, on the well preserved axis, is 42.7mm and on the miss-shapen …

A lead pencil of Post-Medieval date c. AD 1500-1900. Weight is 15.08g, use of a flexible dress-maker’s tape-measure shows the length to be c.63mm. However, in its bent condition it occupies a bent length of 60.4mm. The approximately transverse blunt end has a circular cross-section of 5.8mm diameter and this continues along the length until c.6.2mm from the opposite end at which point the artefact tapers to a, now, blunt point. The flat end of the pencil has a depression, though it is uncertain whether this is intentional or due to later modification or unintentional damage. htt…

A conical weight of unknown date. Weight is 12.40g (0.44oz), the diameter at base is 19.6mm from which the walls taper to 7.1mm at the top. Height is 9.0mm. A straight walled cylindrical hole of 3.9mm diameter passes through the approximate centre of the artefact vertically (from flat base to tapered top). This is more likely to have been used as a weight for weighing how heavy something was, rather than as a spindle whorl.

A lead pot mend weighing 8.31g. It has a maximum thickness of 8.2mm and measures 17.0mm x 15.0mm. One side has a sub-oval shape and smoother flattened surface. The other side has greater variation on the thickness axis and a more irregular undefined 'blob' shape. c.2.4mm in from the flatter surface the mend contracts, and would originally have passed through the vessel wall, before expanding on the opposite side. None of the vessel survives around the mend so no dating can be suggested.

A sub-oval veering to sub-rectangular shaped lead palm guard, probably of Post-Medieval date. This artefact weighs 131.10g. It has a length of 54.7mm and width of 46.0mm. It has a smoother convex surface and more irregular concave surface. The edge of the object varies in thickness from 2.4mm to 12.8mm. Over all, over the dished shape this guard occupies a depth, across the centre, of 11.4mm. An incomplete Post-Medieval lead cloth seal. Disc one is the only part of this artefact to survive. As a result of this, it is impossible to determine whether this was originally a two or four disc type of cloth seal. The disc has a width of 31.9mm. The disc increases to give a length axis measurement of 35.8mm when including the remains of the connecting strip. The outer surface of disc one is covered in relief detail some of which has now completely worn away (unless this was ill-defined when first used). A Medieval lead seal matrix. The matrix is circular with a diameter of 28.9mm. Originally slightly flatter than it is now, the design and legend of the face is formed in the negative so that any impression formed with the matrix would appear in relief. The motif at the centre of the face forms a circular shape consisting of a cross formed by multi-leafed stems interspersed by a cross of what appears to either be a candle, or bud emerging from a cylinder of sepals. A narrow incised continuous line borders the legend above and below. The legend is unclear but seems to probably rea…

The discs are sub-circular in shape. They have a diameter measurement of 21.5mm on one axis and, due to the object having been bent, a bent measurement of 20.0mm when measured with a flexible dress-maker’s tape-measure on the axis at 90 degrees from the previously given dimension. A sub-square to disc shaped artefact that resembles a token of Medieval to early Post-Medieval date. It weighs 5.38g, measures 17.4mm x 16.9mm with a maximum thickness of 5.1mm. The object appears to be made mainly from lead or lead-alloy. The edges thicken to one side of the artefact's surface and the area within has a browner hue. Use of a magnet produces a strong reaction to both sides of the object. This confirms that the browner area is a patch of iron. It is uncertain whether the presence of this iron metal is by design, if so the purpose is unclear, or accidentally present. No …

The two sides splay out in differing directions giving the mend an overal measurement of 38.0mm x 25.0mm. The mend has an overall thickness of 8.0mm.
