A Post-Medieval gold finger-ring. The hoop is circular with a 'D' shaped cross-section being flat on the inner surface and convexly curved on the outer. The finger-ring weigh 5.85g, has an external diameter of 22.4mm. The band that forms the hoop has a width of 3.6mm and thickness of 1.9mm. The external surface is undecorated but dulled by shallow scratches and pits the result of wear while in use and post-depositional damage. A couple of shallow dents and associated burrs are present on the edge between the internal and external surfaces. The inner surface has a shinier appearance an…

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A fragment of a copper-alloy crotal bell of Medieval to Post-Medieval date. Only a small amount, less than a quarter, of the bell survives and none of the suspension loop is present. The fragment weighs 3.49g, has a length of 26.4mm and width of 16.6mm. It has a concave inner surface and convexly curved outer surface. The fragment has a thickness of 2.1mm at one edge and 1.1mm at the opposite edge. The thicker edge is relatively smooth and straight with concave curves at either end. It is probable that this is the edge to, one side of, the crotal bell's sound slot, which would have be…

The rowel weighs 7.52g, has a maximum diameter of 36.3mm and maximum thickness of 4.4mm. The sub-circular aperture at the centre of the artefact has a diameter 4.9mm. Across the central aperture, between the arms of the rowel, the artefact has a diameter of 1.5mm. The arms of the rowel are partially facetted, giving them a sub-oval to sub-hexagonal cross-section. Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A copper-alloy Post-Medieval mount with double integral pointed lugs. This mount weighs 4.13g and has a roughly flat circular shape of 22.4mm diameter. The upper surface and edge have been moulded into a sexfoil fleuret of six wider arcs interspersed with six pellet lobes that create the undulating curved sexfoil shape. One of these larger arcs is damaged resulting in a much straighter edge at this side of the mount. It is uncertain whether this is the result of a casting error during production or later damage. If this is the result of later damage the break is worn. Within this b…

An incomplete copper-alloy Medieval buckle plate. This incomplete plate weighs 3.52g, is sub-rectangular in shape with a length of 21.3mm and width of 19.5mm. Although the plate appears to have straight sides at first glance, closer inspection reveals that the edges are actually slightly concavely curved. The sheet metal has a thickness of 1.2mm. Protruding from one of the width edges are the integral remains of two broken and very worn tabs. These indicate that the plate originally had a bifid notch consisting a central pin slot with sub-angular cut-away corners to either side. The w…

The rectangular end has a width of 12.3mm and the widest part of the tear-drop end has a width measurement of 18.3mm, although this is slightly bent and, if flat, would be a touch wider. A copper-alloy Medieval finger-ring, complete with the exception of a missing setting from the bezel. This finger-ring weighs 2.26g. The ring has a sub-circular loop, possibly the result of having been slightly squashed out of shape. The interior dimensions of the loop are: height 20.5mm and width 19.3mm. The band has a width of 2.9mm and thickness of 1.4mm at the base. Further around the loop the band has a narrower width of 2.7mm. A copper-alloy Medieval flat-topped shield shaped mount. This mount weighs 1.93g, has a height of 12.8mm, width of 11.2mm and thickness of 2.3mm. The front of the shield shows no obvious decoration. However, this surface feels lumpy to the touch which may be the worn remains of moulded decoration. Indeed a diagonal shallow recess of c.2.8mm width crosses the shield. This may originally have been filled with enamel to match a true heraldic design or to suggest at such a motif. The reverse surface of the shield is flat and undecorated. At one end, the top of the object, there is a sub-circular aperture of c.3.8mm diameter set in from the artefact's edge by 2.1mm. This aperture would have been used to suspend the weight, possibly though not conclusively suggesting that the weight may have been used with a steel-yard. The top end of the artefact is rounded and this narrows the object's width to 10.6mm…
