Object type: STRAP END
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Staffordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Medieval silver strap-end and undiagnostic gold ingot The strap-end appears to have terminated in a hook and may have served as a type of chatelaine, not uncommon for key suspension, for example at the end of a belt. The terminal is incomplete and broken. The most closely comparable, base metal example is published in G Egan and F Pritchard, Dress Accessories, London 1991, p. 149, no. 705. Although the published piece is a more elaborate type, the shape and construction are the same. The date, arrived at by ceramic phasing, is 1400–50. Length of strap-end: 55 mm; length of ingo…

Object type: SEAL MATRIX
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Oxfordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A silver seal-matrix of diminutive proportions.  Its sealing surface is circular and is engraved with three spheres within a three-pronged division, surrounded by a beaded border but without a legend.  The device is not easy to interpret.  The reverse is a cone-shaped hexagon terminating in a trefoil handle.  This tiny, enigmatic object was undoubtedly used as a personal seal rather in the fashion of a signet ring.

A hoard of coins and a finger-ring. The coins are mostly official English issues, but with two coins of the Burgundian Netherlands, double patards, which were legal tender here at a valuation of fourpence, thanks to a convention between Edward IV and Charles the Bold in 1469.  The gold coin is of fine gold, over 94% pure.  The English silver coins are sterling standard, 92.5% fine, and the Burgundian coins are 80% fine silver. The coins range in date from the 14th or early 15th century (a now fragmentary halfpenny and some very worn pennies) to the latest coins in the hoard…

Object type: BROOCH
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Worcestershire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A medieval brooch formed from twisted wire crafted to create the impression of plaited ropes.  It measures 18mm x 16mm and is slightly damaged at the top right and at about a quarter down the left side.  It is highly decorative, an impression that is heightened by the random soldering of small spheres upon its surface.  These spheres may once have existed in more profusion and given an original appearance of greater symmetry, but this is by no means certain.

The silver coins listed span the period AD 337-402, ending, as is common with hoards of this date, with siliquae of Arcadius and Honorius dated to AD 395-402…
