Object type: STRAP END
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Staffordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Medieval silver strap-end and undiagnostic gold ingot
The strap-end appears to have terminated in a hook and may have served as a type of chatelaine, not uncommon for key suspension, for example at the end of a belt. The terminal is incomplete and broken. The most closely comparable, base metal example is published in G Egan and F Pritchard, Dress Accessories, London 1991, p. 149, no. 705. Although the published piece is a more elaborate type, the shape and construction are the same. The date, arrived at by ceramic phasing, is 1400–50.
Length of strap-end: 55 mm; length of ingo…

Object type: SPOON
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Cumbria
Workflow stage: Published
The find consists of eleven fragments of a medieval, silver spoon. Four of the fragments constitute the slender stem of the spoon which terminates in a diamond-shaped knop.
The remaining seven fragments form part of the bowl. The largest surviving fragment of the bowl is from the point at which it should meet the stem. This is engraved with the motif of the ‘Hand of God’, poised in benediction. A religious motif, however, does not preclude ownership of the spoon by a lay person. The reverse of this fragment is crudely inscribed with the lett…

Object type: SEAL MATRIX
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Oxfordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A silver seal-matrix of diminutive proportions. Its sealing surface is circular and is engraved with three spheres within a three-pronged division, surrounded by a beaded border but without a legend. The device is not easy to interpret. The reverse is a cone-shaped hexagon terminating in a trefoil handle. This tiny, enigmatic object was undoubtedly used as a personal seal rather in the fashion of a signet ring.

A hoard of coins and a finger-ring.
The coins are mostly official English issues, but with two coins of the Burgundian Netherlands, double patards, which were legal tender here at a valuation of fourpence, thanks to a convention between Edward IV and Charles the Bold in 1469. The gold coin is of fine gold, over 94% pure. The English silver coins are sterling standard, 92.5% fine, and the Burgundian coins are 80% fine silver.
The coins range in date from the 14th or early 15th century (a now fragmentary halfpenny and some very worn pennies) to the latest coins in the hoard…

Object type: HOOKED TAG
Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL
County: Wiltshire
Workflow stage: Published
Silver Anglo-Saxon hooked tag, complete, l. 33mm, w. 14mm, wt. 1.95g. This piece has a triangular plate with elegantly scalloped top and two internal holes near the corners for attachment. The field is plain but the long edges are decorated with borders of incised ladders. There is a slight bulge above the tapering hook. The back is plain. This is probably a dress attachment which could have been used for veiling or gartering, probably the former because it is very light-weight. Heavier-duty hooked tags may also have been used to fasten purses.

Object type: FINGER RING
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Essex
Workflow stage: Published
A medieval silver-gilt iconographic finger-ring, with a two-faceted bezel with crudely engraved images of saints. The figure in the panel on the right appears to hold in her right hand a tower, and may represent St Barbara. The figure on the left is unidentified, and may represent a male saint. The hoop is grooved and beaded in diagonal bands, and the shoulders are engraved with flowers. The diameter of the ring measures 24mm. The ring probably dates to the 15th century.

A medieval finger ring, now badly distorted and measuring 21mm across its greatest diameter. The ring is engraved with the phrase en bon an (‘in a good year’). The inscription is punctuated with sprigs of foliage.

Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Worcestershire

A medieval brooch formed from twisted wire crafted to create the impression of plaited ropes. It measures 18mm x 16mm and is slightly damaged at the top right and at about a quarter down the left side. It is highly decorative, an impression that is heightened by the random soldering of small spheres upon its surface. These spheres may once have existed in more profusion and given an original appearance of greater symmetry, but this is by no means certain.

A small peltate silver mount. The simply moulded outer face is worn. The unworn inner face preserves two rivets, one retaining a tiny circular silver washer. The very short rivets indicate that the mount was secured to something very thin, perhaps to a thin-walled vessel.

A Roman silver spoon with bent handle and broken and damaged bowl. The short, plain, tapered rod handle was seemingly broken and re-pointed in antiquity. There is a simple offset at the junction with the oval bowl, the distal end of which is broken short of the point of its maximum width. An inscription is very lightly incised along the central axis of the inner face of the bowl and truncated at its fractured edge. Starting at the end adjacent to the handle offset are the Latin letters MODE(or I)SIIAN(or NA) - perhaps the cognomen Modestianus or Modestinus. The underside of the bowl …

A fragment of a silver-gilt sprung bow brooch, of Polden Hill type, comprising the wings, top of the bow and part of the covered spring. The side-wings, of semi-circular cross-section, have three milled ribs with intervening cavetto mouldings. At the back only the very stub of the rearward hook survives, together with eight turns of the spring and a fragment of the chord. On the D-sectioned bow two lines of a fine, lightly-recessed, wavy line motif, which starts at each side of the head, converge to form a single decorative mid-rib. All of the mouldings show signs of wear. Gilding rem…
