A small fragment of gold sheet was discovered. The fragment clearly is part of a larger object, but unfortunately close examination has proved unable to establish from what object the fragment came. It is impossible to establish the date of the object from which the fragment came. Analysis of the metal content of the fragment was also unable to provide further help in dating the piece. The fragment was found to contain 91% gold.

This piece is not absolutely diagnostic. Twisted gold ornaments are frequent in the Middle Bronze Age, but not exclusive to that period. The surface analysis does not help in assigning a date.

A fragment of a copper-alloy object, possibly a vessel mount or rein guide dating to the Roman period. The object comprises a slightly curved fragment of sheet copper-alloy. Although broken, this sheet possesses part of its original rim and a marginal groove. From this sheet, there extends at right angles for 14mm a moulding representing the neck of a stylised goose, swan or duck. The moulding turns down at an angle of 45 degrees to form the head of the bird. The head of the bird is hemispherical in section. It is decorated with three chevron grooves and two lentoidal grooves with a dot at their centre representing eyes. Beyond this the moulding flattens to an elongated beak, which possesses five marginal notches on each of its edges. The object measures 42mm in length, the plate measures 17mm in width and 1mm in thickness. The moulding measures 6mm in width and 7mm in thickness. The head measures 27mm in length, a maximum of 8mm in width and 7mm in thickness.
There are several examples of these objects recorded on the PAS database; many have been recorded as possible cart rein guides (BH-EC55C8; HAMP-48C465; IOW-B8B014; LEIC-FAFDD1; LIN-565C52; NLM-596735; SF-757CE6; SUSS-37ADE6; SWYOR-62F4B1and WMID4346), however others are recorded as vessel handles (for example HAMP-2939, LIN-565C52 and LIN-567032). The latter records note that swan neck vessel handles are not uncommon on Roman temple sites, suggesting that these heads were detached from the vessel and used as votive objects in their own right. HAMP-2939 notes that these finds have also been associated with first century military sites. Similar examples are published and illustrated in Crummy (1983:71-72 refs: 2035, 3036, 2037) where part of the vessel wall is visible in each example. Suggested date: AD 43-250. See also an example of a rein guide from Cirencester with a similar swan in situ (Webster 1958, 74 no. 37 fig. 3). However, it is worth noting that the position of part of the original rim on the sheet copper-alloy from which the swan extends, makes it unlikely that the fragment formed part of a rein guide of swan and eagle type.
Compare also with an object described as a 'bronze double hook with bird's (sic) heads at the extremities' which was found with a collection of horse harness within the stairwell of a Roman villa at Wange, Belgium (Lodewijckx, M. et al, 1994, 82 no. 4.24 and 84, Fig. 10)
