This report concerns four silver pennies of William I (1066-87). The coins were found on separate occasions between September 2008 and April 2009, but all were found within the same area of c. 20m². All four coins are of the same type, the Two Sceptres type (BMC iv) of William I, and all were struck at the mint of Gloucester. Three of the coins (one of which survives as a fragment) were struck by the moneyer Leofwine, and all three of these were struck from the same dies. The fourth was struck by the moneyer Sigelac or Seolcwine (represented here as SILAC). Coins of this period are r…

A late Medieval pendant crucifix with beaded terminals open at the centre. On the front Christ is suspended from the cross beneath the titulus, which would have carried the initials INRI for Iesus Nazarenus Rex Iudiorum (Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews). This is now much abraded and illegible. Christ is flanked by the Virgin Mary on his right side and John the Evangelist on his left. Each of the figures is equally lacking in detail. On the reverse of the pendant is a figure of St Christopher, carrying the Christ Child. St Christopher, as well as being the Patron Saint of travel…

I have examined a group of 11 coins and fragments of coins the coins are listed in detail in the accompanying catalogue. All the coins are silver and all but two fragments are official coins of the medieval kings of England, and will thus be of the traditional sterling standard, i.e. 92.5 fine metal. The remaining two fragments appear to come from one coin, a sterling imitation of English pennies issued by the French lord Gaucher de Chatillon. These will have a silver fineness of c. 80%. Although the group is relatively small, it represents most of the silver denominations of lat…

A corroded and bent rectangular copper-alloy sheet plate from a single-looped medieval buckle. The plate is formed of a bent sheet folded double with a recessed pin notch. The lower fold is has been folded back on itself as a result of old damage, but was around the same length as the upper; it is, however, narrower (c. 14.95mm). The folds are connected by a pair of rivets at the frame end; there would have been a pair at the attachment end (now missing); another in the centre of the upper sheet also connects the folds. In total three rivets survive in situ and have rounded heads and …

A corroded and incomplete shield-shaped cast copper-alloy medieval harness pendant bearing the arms of England. The object is of the 'heater' shield shape, that is, with a flat top, and sides which curve steeply to a point. From the top edge a suspension loop would have protruded centrally at ninety degrees to the pendant; only a vestige now remains. The pendant's upper surface features moulded heraldic decoration in the form of three lions passant guardant arranged one above the other. The field is inlaid with red enamel and, although no trace survives of gilding, it is supposed that…

A corroded and damaged cast copper-alloy fragment, plausibly from a medieval harness pendant. In the centre is a separately moulded rosette riveted through the plate. This is framed by an incised eight-pointed star, the points formed by two converging incised lines; the points at the cardinal points are longer than those in the angles. The surface variable green patina with patches of off-white corrosion product. Some red-brown metal shows through beneath the patina. This is consistent with gilding; patches of gilt survives around the rosette and on it. The fragment has received con…

Cast iron annular buckle with iron pin. The frame is circular with a sub-circular cross section. There is a crack across the frame and corrosion fills the space. There is no evidence for a constriction within the frame of the buckle to which a pin would fit and so it appears the pin would have moved freely around the frame. The wire pin terminates with a tapered point at one need and a loop around the frame at the other end. The pin is has a sub circular section. The entire buckle has been affected by corrosion. The length of the pin is 16.25mm.
