Two Roman gold ear-rings, one (A) a hook ear-ring, the other (B) a hoop ear-ring. A) Gold ear-ring of disc, bar and pendant type, its hook slightly distorted, the disc dented and damaged at one side, and one of the two pendants lacking. The embossed disc and double-ridged trapezoidal crossbar are fastened to an integral plain back-plate. The disc conceals the lower part of the hook, which is fastened to its back-plate. Surface metal analysis conducted at the British Museum indicated an approximate silver content for the ingot of 99%; it weighs 23.11 grams. The fragment has been cut, possibly with a chisel, from one end of a cigar-shaped ingot of rounded trapezoidal section; length, 25 mm; width, 16.3 mm. It would have been cast in a simple, open-topped mould cut in stone or drawn in the earth, and there is a slight lip along one edge where the metal has overflowed the mould. A very worn copper-alloy Post-Medieval British coin weight for a Laurel (20 shillings) of James I, 3rd coinage, dating to AD 1619-1625 (Withers and Withers, 1995: pp. 12-13). The weight is roughly square in form and on the front face depicts a laureate and draped bust left within a pelleted circle. The reverse carries a crowned mark of value XX/s within an inner circle, countermarkes with a crowned letter I (for James I) at top left. It measures approximately 17mm in width, 2mm in thickness, and c.7g in weight. As Withers and Withers,1995: pp. 12-13, 68.
