A small fragment from a thin gold wire strip 12.5 mm long, 2.0 mm wide and c. 0.25mm thick, was recovered from peaty marsh deposits that pre-date the construction of a Roman timber building on the site in the middle of the 1st Century BC.

This molten droplet of heavy yellow metal was reported as possible Treasure, because it was found in the vicinity of other finds of molten gold/electrum which might be connected with the production of Iron Age gold torcs or other objects. It was sent to the British Museum for scientific analysis which demonstrated the droplet was made of copper alloy.

The find consists of a single Iron Age twisted multi-strand style torc with ring terminals similar to others found in Norfolk over the last 60 years.  The torc has an internal diameter of approximately 20 cm.  It is made of predominantly gold and silver. It is made from four strands of wires twisted around each other two and a half times. Knaresborough ‘Ring’. This find was discovered and reported before the Treasure Act 1996 abolished Treasure Trove in England, Wales and Northern Ireland. Circumstances of Discovery: On 9th June 1994 a gold ring was reported to the coroner for North Yorkshire by the owner who had recently purchased the find believing it to have been found in the Knaresborough area in North Yorkshire. A ribbon or thin bar of gold 73 mm long, 9 mm wide and 1.25 mm thick with originally a curved profile on an arch of an approximate diameter of 80-90 mm, but sharply bent 43 mm from the squared off end. The object appears to have been cut from of a larger object. A complete copper-alloy finger ring of spiral type (Guiraud Type 7c), dating to the Late Iron Age or Roman period (Guiraud 1989, 195). The ring is made from a single bent rectangular-section strip of metal. The external diameter of the ring is 16.35mm the internal diameter of the hoop is 11.39mm. The twisted metal band is 4.63mm in width and 1.99mm thick. The ring weighs 5.7 grams.
