A Lower Palaeolithic Acheulean bifaced flint hand axe dating c. 500000-190000 BC.
The axe is crudely triangular in form and planoconvex in profile and in cross-section. The point is narrower in thickness than the body, with the body increasing gradually in thickness along its length. The thickest section of the body is approximately halfway along its length, which is also the widest point. The body continues to increase in width but decrease in thickness after this point into the sub-rounded butt.
One face of the axe has been retouched more than the other wit…

A near complete Lower Palaeolithic, Acheulean, bifaced flint hand axe dating c. 500000-190000 BC. The axe is pointed-oval in form and planoconvex in profile and cross-section. The point is slightly narrower than the butt, with the thickest section about two thirds of the way along the body. Each face is covered in shallow flake removal scars with some evidence for more precise retouching on some of the upper edges. The lower edges have been bluntly retouched. The surface is covered by re-formed cortex which has a mid-orange patina due to iron staining, with paler areas in denser corte…

Part of a flint handaxe of probable Lower Palaeolithic (c. 800,000 - c. 250,000 BC) date.
The light greyish-brown flint is partially patinated. A darker, mid-orange fossil band extends transversely across the axe, at the point of the break, and may in fact be the cause of the damage. The surviving piece is semioval, with a pointed-oval section. The tool is bifacially worked, the flaking being covering, scalar and of low angle. In addition to the original working, a narrow blade scar cuts through the surface patination. This scar, which is aligned transversely and located adjacent t…

A flint handaxe of Lower Palaeolithic date.
The axe has been made from a nodule or large flake. The base is slightly convex, a transverse flake having been removed in an attempt to flatten it. The convex sides taper towards a (possibly damaged) tip. The thickness also tapers from the base to the tip. Both surfaces exhibit working in the form of broad flakes which radiate downwards and outwards from the centre. On one side finer flake scars are visible just below the tip and the other edges show possible evidence of wear or grinding. On one of the long sides, just above the base of t…

An incomplete flint ovate handaxe of Lower Palaeolithic (c. 500,0000BP-c. 40,000BP) date. Wymer (1968, p. 57) suggests that the majority of ovate handaxes belong to the Late Middle Acheulian Industries.
Approximatley half of the tool survives. It has convex sides and narrows towards the intact cutting edge. The tool has been bi-facially worked to create a pointed-oval profile. The surfaces display a series of broad flake removal scars which angle downwards from the centre. In addition to the broad flakes a number of narrower, blade-like flakes have been removed to help form the edge…

A flint handaxe of probable Middle Palaeolithic (430,000 - 40,000 BP) date.
The form of the tool is sub-cordate, having a rounded butt and slightly convex sides which taper towards a (now missing) point. In section, the tool is pointed sub-oval, with one face having a much more pronounced curvature than the other. The tool has been roughly worked through the removal of a number of broad flakes, the scars for which extend downwards and outwards from the central ridge on each side. At the butt is a surviving portion of the original cortex. The break at the tip reveals the ori…

A flint handaxe of probable lower Palaeolithic date. This tool was identified and recorded from photographs, making exact identification uncertain. However, the form is consistent with an Acheulian Flat-butted or 'Bout Coupé' handaxe (see J. Wymer; 1968; pp. 45-68).
In plan, the tool is sub-triangular, having a roughly horizontal bottom edge and extending to a point at the top. All three sides are slightly convex and the corners are rounded rather than sharp in nature. No side view was available to the recorder but the surfaces of the bi-facially worked tool appear to be slightly c…

A pointed flint handaxe of Lower Palaeolithic (c. 500,000 - 300,000 BC) date.
The tool has been made from a large flint nodule. At the butt end there remains a portion of the original cortex. The tool tapers upwards from the rounded butt, decreasing gradually in width and thickness towards the rounded point. There are several broad flake removal scars, which radiate downwards and outwards from the butt end, whilst the edges have received much finer retouching. The reverse has less evidence of working, but there are several broad flake removal scars near the butt. The flint is a pati…

Just over half of a Lower Palaeolithic bi-face handaxe. The suggested date range for this implement is 500,000BC - 300,000BC.
The object would originally have been sub-oval. It is fairly simple in form, having been created by the removal of large, broad flakes and shaped to a rough point at end. The flint is heavily patinated and mid orange-brown in colour.
The implement measures 92.6mm long by 87.9mm wide and 38.3mm thick; it weighs 291.39g.

A broad flint blade of probable late Palaeolithic to early Mesolithic date. The implement is sub-rectangular, with rounded corners. It is trapezoidal in section and has two angled vertical faces either side of a flat central vertical face. There are several chips along the edges, which are probably consistent with heavy useage. On the reverse there is a bulb of percussion. The rippling is difficult to see due to the heavy greyish-white patination. The tool measures 74.5mm long by 27.6mm wide and 7.7mm thick. It weighs 19.93g.

A damaged and incomplete flint blade of probable late Palaeolithic to early Mesolithic date. The remainder of the implement measures 57.8mm long by 19.6mm wide and 5.9mm thick. The upper surface has a flat central vertical face between two angled vertical faces. The edges are worn and damaged. The reverse is flat and unworked. The flint is a dark brown colour and has a heavily patinated white surface. It weighs 7.65g.

An assemblage of 17 flint blades, probably ranging in date from late Palaeolithic to late Mesolithic. The wider blades probably date from the early Mesolithic period. They generally have two downwards angled vertical faces, which sit one either side of a flat central face. Some show evidence of re-touching or wear and most are fairly heavily patinated. One of the blades (bottom right in the photo) has a very wide central face and could date from the very late Palaeolithic period. The remainder of the blades are narrow and have a triangular section (ie. they have no flat face on top). T…

A flint handaxe of lower Palaeolithic date. A thick butted, pointed handaxe typical of the mid Acheulian industries (c. -250,000 to -200,000 BP). The implement measures 132mm high by 65.6mm wide and 28mm thick. The base of the tool is only roughly shaped, with some of the natural surface of the flint having been left on. Traces of the natural flint surface can also be seen on one side of the body. The object tapers gradually to a point. Broad flake removal scars can be seen on both faces and there is some re-touching of the edges and point. The surface of the flint is heavily weathered…

A possible crude flint implement of Palaeolithis date. The object is a re-touched flake of the mid to late Acheulian period. It is sub-oval in shape and measures 63.9mm high by 44.1mm wide and 18.3mm thick. The reverse of the flake is flat and there appears to be little if any working. The upper surface is convex, has a central vertical ridge, and is uneven. The vertical edges show possible signs of re-touching. The flint is a mid creamy-orange colour. It weighs 52.90g.

Flint implement of lower Palaeolithic date. A flake scraper or knife dating to the mid Acheulean period (c. -200,000 BP or earlier). The object is heavily patinated on one of its surfaces and is made of a flint of fairly coarse greyish/buff colour. It was probably made by striking a core with a hammer and the sharp edge re-touched to create the final form. The piece is only worked one one face and the shape is roughly amygdaloid. The level of abraision shows that the implement has been much rolled and is therefore re-deposited. It has also suffered slightly from modern damage. It measu…

Flint implement of Palaeolithic date. A heavy butted hand axe dating to the mid Acheulean period (c. 200,000 BP or earlier). The object is bifacially worked. It is made from a creamy/grey flint, and has a deep honey-coloured cortex. The axe has some modern damage to the point and to the butt. The intact surfaces are well rolled indicating that it was carried to its findspot, probably by fluvio-glacial drift in antiquity. The amygdaliod form is one of the most common types recovered from the gravel deposits around the Ouse and particularly the sites at Kempston and Biddenham. It measure…

Approximately one half of an ovate handaxe of lower Palaeolithic date (c.-500,000 to -180,000). The implement has been shaped on both convex sides by the removal of transverse flakes. There is also some evidence for retouching around the edges. It has been broken transversely across the middle, probably during antiquity. The flint is yellowish-orange in colour and is heavily weathered. It measures 77mm long by 75.8mm wide and weighs 143.04g. The thickest part is at the centre where it is 21.7mm. It tapers in thickness towards the narrow end. It was found in close proximity to a stream…

Flint handaxe of Lower Palaeolithic date. Measures 125.6mm long, by 82.9mm wide, by 34.4mm thick. Weight = 324.5g. Thought to be Lower Palaeolithic due to the fact that a flake has been deliberately removed from one of the edges, thus creating a scraping edge.
