Object type: TRANCHET AXEHEAD
Broad period: MESOLITHIC
County: Essex
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A flint tranchet axe dating to the Mesolithic period (c.9000-4000 BC).
Description: The axe is irregular rectangular in shape and sub-lozenge in cross-section. The flatter ventral face has had much of the cortext removed and large flakes have been removed across the surface and around the edges, including the blade, which has been formed by one strike. Finer working of smaller flaking is evident around the edges of the sides. The butt is wider than the body and is again formed of large flaking. The dorsal face is bowed with widespread shal…

Object type: TRANCHET AXEHEAD
Broad period: MESOLITHIC
County: Oxfordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A Mesolithic tranchet axehead. A flaked core tool of broadly rectangular shape and asymmetrical profile formed from a light grey flint nodule interspersed with large patches of cortex. The dorsal face is convexly curved. The ventral face is concavely bowed. The long edges are roughly parallel with the narrowed sub-rounded blade. The butt is slightly narrower than the body and is relatively square and flat. Both the dorsal and ventral faces are crudely worked across the body. The dorsal face has a sub-central ridge / spine extending longitundinally along the body. The cutting edge has …

Object type: AXEHEAD
Broad period: MESOLITHIC
County: Hertfordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
An incomplete flint Mesolithic tranchet axehead dating to c.10,000-4,000 BC. The chert is mottled grey-brown with small patches of cortex surviving on one face and edge. The axehead is sub-rectangular in plan with the bladed end rounded and the butt end rectilinear. The core has been irregularly worked on both faces to create a plano-convex, sub-trapezoidal cross-section at the cutting edge which thickens towards the butt, becoming more lozengform. The butt end is broken with a smooth flat face. The axehead is 38mm long, 37mm wide and 22mm thick at the butt end, 35mm wide and 1.8mm ti…

Object type: MICROBURIN
Broad period: MESOLITHIC
County: Northamptonshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A Mesolithic microburin which has been made from a tertiary flint blade.
The sub-rectangular tool has several arises on its dorsal surface and clear rippling on the ventral. The upper edge has a straight break where the blade has been snapped; immediately below this are two diagonally opposing notches, possibly from another attempted snapping. The cutting of the upper notch has resulted in the production of a sharp point. A further notch has been cut at the opposite end to this point. The flint is a translucent light yellowish-brown.

One complete flint blade and one partial blade, probably dating from the Late Mesolthic to Early Neolithic periods.
The complete example is a secondary blade which narrows towards the distal end and displays several arises on its dorsal surface. Part of the striking platform remains, there is possible evidence of platform preparation and the bulb-of-percussion is low. The flint is a patinated light greyish-brown colour. The incomplete blade is less heavily patinated. Above the break it is parallel-sided, tapering towards the striking point, where there is a low bulb-of-percussion a…

An assemblage of three flint blades, grouped due to their geographical proximity and probably dating from the Late Mesolithic to Early Neolithic.
Two of the pieces are secondary blades which have striking platforms and a pronounced bulb-of-percussion. The longest blade, which may be earlier than the other two, has a smaller bulb-of-percussion, perhaps indicating indirect percussion, and a more heavily recorticated surface.
Dimensions of longest blade: 73.8mm long, 24.3mm wide. Weight: 18.1g.
Total weight of assemblage: 46.1g.

Blade no. 36 (right-hand blade in photograph) and 37 (left-hand blade) are of trapezoidal section, have diffuse bulbs of percussion and are snapped at their distal ends. The third blade, no. 67, is of triangular section and also has a low bulb and diffuse rippling. All three blades have a white or off-white surface, which is the result of deposition in alkaline soil.

Two flint blades of probable Late Mesolithic to Mid Neolithic date (c. 7000 - 3300 BC).
Blade no. 90 (left-hand flint on image) is incomplete, the lack of patination on the break suggesting this damage occurred relatively recently. An assemblage of five flint blades, probably dating from the Mesolithic to Neolithic periods.
Blade numbers 24 (top left on photograph), 29 (top right) and 26 (middle right) are all broken tertiary blades, have trapezoidal to triangular sections and show no evidence of retouch. Blade no. 25 (middle left) has the same cross section but one end has been abruptly retouched to form a point, and could be described as a microlith. The final blade, no. 28 (bottom row), is a secondary blade, trapezoidal in section and soft-hammer-struck. The right-hand mesial edge of this blade exhibits pr…

A group of ten flint blades, forming part of a larger assemblage of lithic material (see other PAS records).
Five of the blades are secondary (i.e. retaining some cortex), and the remaining five are tertiary (no cortex). Nos. 3, 14, 16, 22, 23 and 11 have been snapped at their distal ends. The lack of patination on the breaks of nos. 8, 16 and 11 suggests relatively recent damage, whereas that on the others is consistent with the overall patination of the blade, indicating that the damage occurred in antiquity. Most of the flakes have a light blueish recortification, retain parts o…
