Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Two Mesolithic (c.8300-3500 BC) flint implements. The larger flake, on the right in the photograph, is the retouched tip of a blade implement that has been broken at some point in the past. The flint measures 20.28mm in length, 16.97mm in width, is 3.51mm thick and weighs 1.56g. The smaller flake, on the left in the photograph, is a 'piercer'. There is evidence of retouching along the edges. It has been formed from a flake that was primarily a bladelet blank. The flint measures 15.71mm in length, is 13.66mm wide, has a thickness of 2.8mm and weighs 0.71g.

The broken tip from a large flint 'long blade' implement. The flint is pale grey-blue in colour. The artefact has been provisionally dated to the final upper palaeolithic period (40,000 - 8,300 BC) although based on the tip of the blade alone this cannot be confirmed. The artefact measures 33.84mm long by 17.62mm wide, is 3.55mm thick and weighs 2.16g.

Undiagnostic struck flint flakes often referred to as debitage. These finds represent waste flakes created during the knapping process and none could be dated with any degree of confidence although the suggestion was made that the white flint flake (top left in the photograph) is typical of the palaeolithic period. The overall weight of this group is 47.20g and comprises of 9 individual pieces.

Cast copper-alloy dagger quillon. The object essentially has three sections to it. The central section is sub-oval in plan with a rectangular hole through the middle which would have taken the handle and blade tang. There is a short cylindrical projection from one side of this central section (measuring 12mm in length and 0.5mm in diameter) which would presumably have provided further protection for the fingers. On one of the flat surfaces of the central section there are two incised lines - forming a 'V'. The remaining two sections form the 'wings' which flank the central sectio…

Object type: BELL
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Oxfordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Incomplete cast copper-alloy late medieval bell. The lower half of the bell has been lost through damage although what remains of the bell suggests that it was originally conical or 'bell-shaped' rather than spherical. The attachment loop, which is integrally cast is in the form of a rounded trianglular lug with drilled central hole of c.1mm diameter. Below the loop and above the main body of the bell, the bell has a pronounce waisted curve - the triangular lug is set perpendicular to this. The bell is in poor condition most of the original surface has been lost although the remai…

Cast copper-alloy probable token. One side is decorated with an eight spoked wheel design whilst the other side is difficult to decipher due to overall wear & corrosion The item, especially the wheel design, bears some resemblance to the ubiquitious lead tokens but these are usually one-sided and are of an alloy that is predominantly lead. no good parallels were found for this item and it has been dated broadly to the later Medieval to early post Medieval based on stylistic grounds. The item has a diameter of 21.12mm, is 2.33mm thick and weighs 4.71g.

Post Medieval to Modern impersonal seal matrix. The object is cast in one piece and is essentially conical with a round base of 5mm depth and then a groove above this surmounted by a sub-rectangular 4-sided elongated pyramid which has incised foliate decoration on the two narrowest sides. Surmounting this section is the suspension loop which is lonzenge shaped with a round hole which is, in turn, surmounted by a small knop. The actual face of the seal carries a design of cross-hatching in the shape of lozenges. All surfaces were once gilded but only remnants of this remain. The ov…

Object type: CLOTH SEAL
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Oxfordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
One complete inner lead disc of a post-medieval four part cloth seal. These seals were cast as plain and then later stamped with the chosen design. This disc is plain on the reverse whilst the front carries the 'Charles II type head' with the inscription OF ENG LAND around the portrait, the border is decorated with a circle of beading. This particular seal probably dates to the reign of James II (1685-1688). This disc has been pierced directly above the portrait and was possibly used as a pendant or label after its initial use as a seal.

A glass seal roundel from an onion bottle or similar. The glass was originally a yellow-green as can be seen from the break but the outer surfaces are now coated with irridescent corrosion which is caused by the leaching of silica to the surface. Due to corrosion it is not possible to make full sense of the inscription but it does appear to refer to a William and to Oxfordshire. The seal has a diameter of 41.4mm.
