A fragment of a Medieval iron horseshoe dated c.AD1150-1350. The shoe is just under one half of the whole object and has two complete holes and is broken along the middle of the other. Clarke Type 2.

A complete iron buckle dating to the Medieval to Post-Medieval period (c.AD 1350 - 1750). The buckle is a single loop that is sub-square in plan with a sub-rectangular cross section. There is a flattened, sub-rectangular probable pin rest along one length of the frame. The pin is now in position and moves freely. No decoration can be determined. The buckle is a red brown colour and heavily corroded.
A comparable example recorded on the PAS database is OXON-0B54D1, where it is stated that iron buckles such as this are likely part of a horse harness fittings.

A small cast spherical iron canon ball with a diameter of 39.17mm or 1.54 inches, weighing 190.4gm c. AD 1550 – 1750. The size of the ball suggest that it is from a Serpentine, or conceivably, it might have been used in a larger calibre field piece, firing canister shot. The Serpentine is referenced at P 55 - Principal English guns of the sixteenth century - Artillery Through the Ages (Albert Manucy)

Four complete possibly Roman Iron nails dating to c. AD 43 - 410. One of the nails is bent (nail 4). The nails have a flat circular head which are square in cross-section, and rectangular shafts which taper to a point. The shafts are square in cross-secion.
Nail 1 is 92.6mm in length, 24.2mm maximum width, and weighs 26.26g
Nail 2 is 90.2mm in length, 21.7mm maximum width, and weighs 23.37g
Nail 3 is 81.2mm in length, 20mm maximum width, and weighs 22.41g

A significantly corroded ferrous object that has the look of a bridle and or harness device C. 50 BC - 410 AD. At one end, there is a broken circular hoop, the opposite end is now fragmented and split. From the circular end, the round cross section broadens towards the centre where there are then two waisted bands. The larger of the raised sections may have been more angular in form from which the opposite arm extends with what might be an oblong cross section. A large group of hobnails from a site that has given up many Roman coins, pottery and two Brooches. c. 43 - 410 AD. The nails are hand wrought with square shanks with hemispherical heads that are either domed or angled four sided pyramidal in form. There are 40 nails with an average length is 17mm. with the head diameter at around 8mm. Individually they weigh around the 1gm. but collectively, they weight 37.1gm. All are covered with ferrous oxide corrosion with a mottled dark brown patina.

An incomplete possible iron tong of uncertain date. This could possibly be one half of a blacksmiths tongs. The remaining tong is sub-rectangular in form and has a rounded terminal at one end and pointed terminal at the other. The tong is rectangular in cross-section and narrows in width from 18.9mm maximum width to the pointed terminal at 4.3mm in width. An incomplete post Medieval cast iron rowel spur possibly dating to c. 1600 - 1700 AD. The spur is complete bar the terminals to each arm and one of the points to the 6-pointed rowel. The rowel is held in a plain box at the terminal of a straight, circular cross section post. The side arms, with their plano-convex cross section, have a high crest and broad heel section which then curves/sweeps down and tapers to the now missing terminals. An incomplete iron, wrought Medieval tanged arrowhead c. 1200 - 1450 AD. This small iron arrowhead may fit into the swallowtail form but in the absence of much of the tangs, it is difficult to be conclusive on type. The head consists of a narrow triangular form with a diamond cross section. The tangs are now largely broken away. The surface is heavily eroded with considerable ferrous oxide and in danger of fragmenting, if not conserved.
Dimensions. 43.75mm long, 13.33mm wide with the socket remnant measuring 6.2mm. It weighs 3.7gm.

A large Post Medieval or later, iron key c. 1500 - 1800 AD. Although heavily eroded, the shank and bow are circular in cross section. The bow has an oval top but is then inverted where it joins the shank to give an overall, kidney bean shape. The bit in intact with clear cut wards in the broad form of a patriarchal cross with the lower cross ward having upturned ends. There is the remnant of a tip collar. The key is 131.59mm long, the bow is 47.56mm wide and the shank has a maximum diameter of 8.72mm. The bit is 28.16mm deep and 25.52mm wide with a thickness of 4.9. It weighs 78.3gm

A large cast iron post Medieval locking key c. 1600 - 1800 AD. The bow oval and has a circular cross section. The shank is plain with a pair of raised collars just behind the pin section. There is then a bit that appears not to have been cut with its key wards, however, being heavily corroded, there may be wards under the crud of the ferrous erosion. The key is 157.05mm in length, the bow diameter is 54.57 and the bit has a total depth of 32.24mm. It weighs 85.9gm.
A similar type of key can be seen on the PAS database LON-7B88B3 , which is dated to 17th century

An incomplete Medieval-Post Medieval iron padlock, c. 1450-1700 AD. The padlock has a spherical form, with a circular shackle arm. The arm is roughly square in cross-section measuring 5.62mm. one half of the body is missing, exposing the remnants of the inner mechanism. The lock is heavily corroded with considerable surface flaking. The ball diameter is 29.8mm, the overall length is 54.2mm and the diameter across the shackle is 34.1mm, and it weighs 38.4gm.

A complete Post Medieval cast iron shoe patten dating to the 17th century. The shoe patten has a wavy-edged frame with globular tabs at each end with two cylindrical nails in each for attachment.
The shoe patten is 167.2 mm in length, 71.2 mm in width, 22.8 mm in thickness, and weighs 102.17 g.
A similar patten can be found on the database which has been dated to 17th century. See record LON-94CDA6.
