A broken cast copper-alloy Roman finger ring of c. third century date. The ring is a small example comprising a slender, rectangular-sectioned hoop which has broken at one side of the bezel. The bezel is oval in plan and the shoulders of the finger ring are constricted at the intersection of the bezel and hoop. The remains of a white paste can be seen in the bezel; this may have been the glue for a decorative insert of the remains of degraded enamel.

A copper-alloy finger ring made from a cut-down bracelet and dating to the late Roman period (late 4th - 5th century AD). The finger ring has been made by bending a terminal fragment of a thin rectangular-section bracelet into a loop to form a finger ring. Although there is no obvious decoraton thin cuffed bracelets date to the later Roman period. Swift (2012,1, 6) comments that the reuse of bracelet fragments as finger rings is seen during the later 4th to mid-5th centuries AD, with some examples being found in Saxon cemeteries. From the increasing number of examples recorded by the …

A copper-alloy, coiled finger ring dating from the late Iron Age to the early Medieval periods (c. 200 BC to AD 800). The ring is formed of a circular sectioned rod, which tapers in thickness over a single coil. One end of the rod has a rectangular sectioned terminal while the other tapers (or is broken) to a point. Coiled, or spiralled finger rings occur from the Bronze Age through to the early-medieval period. However the rod from which the finger rings are formed generally have a flat or D-shaped cross section, whereas this example is circular sectioned. It is possible therefore th…

An incomplete copper-alloy 'spiral' finger ring of later Iron Age to early-medieval date (c. 200 BC to AD 800). The finger-ring is circular in plan and formed from a D-shaped rod that has been coiled around twice forming a spiral. The terminals are narrower than the rest of the band and terminate with a flat, possibly cut end. It is likely that this finger ring is incomplete as comparative examples often have three or more coils. There is no decoration either externally or internally. The plain nature of this artefact makes it difficult to date precisely, with a fairly similar example…

An incomplete cast copper copper-alloy Roman finger ring dating from c. AD 43-200. Henig Type II (1974, fig.1), having a sub-oval bezel with a hoop of D-shaped cross-section. The bezel has raised edges to take an oval intaglio - a black glass which depicts a figure, possibly a satyr, advancing right with swirling cloak over his shoulder. Some gilding survives on both the interior and exterior. The use of a decorative intaglio is most popular in the 2nd and particularly the 3rd century AD. Guiraud Type 2a/b.
