Roman (c.AD 43 to 409) probable iron hob nail: It has a hemi-sperical head and a square incomplete shank. It measures 11.78mm, 9.17mm and weighs 0.65g. Hobnails were used in Roman footwear, boots and sandals (caligae) were made from three main pieces of leather, the upper sole, lamina and the insole, all three layers were clenched together with hobnails, frequently arranged in patterns, some of which were created to facilitate comfortable walking (Bishop and Coulston: 1993).

An incomplete Roman iron cleat, used as a fastener on leather and dating to the period c.AD 43-410. The cleat is oval in plan and rectangular in cross section. There are two integral arms on the longitudinal axis, one projecting at each edge. Both are circular in cross section, and curve outwards and then terminate in worn breaks. Both sides are undecorated. Replace photo with edited version when measurements can be ascertained.

An incomplete, possible Roman iron knife, with integral tang. The knife has a straight back (some damage above the tang/blade junction) and the blade (also damaged) is slightly convex, rising to the now-missing tip. Similar examples have been recorded at Hod Hill, Dorset, and are dated to the mid-first century AD however the style would have had a long life span (Manning 1982:114). An iron, Roman hipposandal of type 1 (Manning 1985, fig. 16.1) dating from the late 1st to mid 2nd centuries AD, around AD 50-150. The hipposandal has a long, vertical neck at the front end, probably originally ending in a hole or loop, although this is now missing. A small hook protrudes from the centre of the rear of the hipposandal. The sole is oval shaped; two pointed wings folded over inwards protrude from the centre and another two from the rear, one of which is now missing.

A near-complete but corroded iron brooch in the Dolphin style, dating to the 1st century AD. The brooch has a hinged pin and the only a section of one wing is missing. The catch-plate is wide and complete. Corrosion obscures any obvious decoration. AD 55-100.
