A medieval silver coin: a clipped penny possibly of Richard II (AD 1377 - 99), York mint, possibly Type II as described in Purvey (1962) or struck from local dies. Much of the legend is illegible and not enough details survive to be able to be certain of the identification, but the cross saltire before CIVI is clear. Compare North (1991) Volume 2, number 1329 or 1330 on page 62 - 63. Obverse: [...]VS[...] Forward facing crowned bust with possible annulet circular mark on breast, nothing by shoulders. A Medieval silver coin; half cut voided long cross penny of Henry III (AD 1216 - 1272), Class Va - Vc dating from AD 1250 - 1256. The moneyer is probably Gilbert at Canterbury, but the reverse lettering is not grouped in the usual way reading: "[...]/(RT)[-]/ON C". The coin appears to be double struck, having moved in the die, leaving a wide space after the T of the moneyer's name, and between the HE and the N of HENRIC. It is 16.6mm long, 9.0mm wide and 0.75mm thick. It weighs 0.59gm. See North number 991/1 - 993, pages 226 - 227 of North (1994) Volume 1.
