Object type: STUD
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Somerset
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Post medieval cast copper alloy stud. The head of the stud is roughly circular in plan although it is flattened on one side, and this may be a worn break, suggesting that the shape of the head was originally ovoid. The obverse surface of the head is rough and irregular due to wear, and no decoration survives. The reverse is flat. The stub of an attachment spike projects from the reverse. It is located off-centre and appears to be rectangular in cross section, although this is obscured somewhat by wear on the break.
The head is 8.0mm in diameter and 2.2mm thick (excluding the spike …

Object type: MOUNT
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Somerset
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A post medieval copper alloy lozenge-shaped mount or stud with an integral spike on the reverse. The lozenge-shaped plate is convex on the obverse and probably concave on the reverse (it is filled with mud). The corners and sides are rounded, probably from wear. The spike is located centrally on the reverse and is bent over to 90 degrees. The front of the plate is very worn with perhaps traces of a large raised, moulded flower within a raised line border. There are two irregularly-shaped fragments of what is probably the original surface in the centre of the obverse. These have a dark…

County: Somerset
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A post medieval copper alloy mount dating to the 17th century. The mount has the shape of a pointed leaf or elongated acorn, wider towards one end with a slight projecing stem and tapering continuously towards the point at the other, possibly worn transverse lines seperate the wider 'cup' from the tapering 'nut'. It is D shaped in cross section; the obverse is convex and the reverse is flat. On the reverse the remains of two attachment lugs are situated centrally on the longitudinal axis. The lugs terminate in worn, pointed breaks. No decoration survives anywhere on the piece and it i…

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
The terminal of a Post-Medieval copper alloy spur. The fragment consists of a bar of copper alloy which is pointed-oval-shaped in cross section and expands gradually in width from the worn break towards a bi-lobed, figure-of-eight terminal. The lobe nearer to the bar is larger than the far one and they are each pierced by a hole (3.7 and 3.1mm in diameter respectively). The lobes are sub-rectangular or oval in cross-section. One side of the piece is flatter and rougher, suggesting that this is the internal side.
The piece is very worn all over and is covered with a green patina. It…

Object type: KEY (LOCKING)
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Somerset
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A cast copper alloy casket key of probable early Post-Medieval date. The bow is incomplete; at least half of it has been lost to an old break, but it appears to have originally been oval or kidney-shaped. Traces survive of a double lobed projection into the bow above the connection with the shank.
The key has a solid oval shank which is expanded where it joins the bow and may have the highly abraded remnant of a collar adjacent to this join. Six millimetres from the bow, the shank narrows and afterwards maintains a uniform thickness until the end where it forms a tapering pin, whi…

Part of a copper alloy (latten) post medieval seal top spoon dating to the period c.AD 1550-1650. The fragment comprises the spoon knop. The terminus is a flat oval disc which tapers down to two adjacent collars, the second being slightly narrower than the first. From the second collar, the knop then tapers gradually before expanding to a baluster which narrows before meeting another pair of collars, first a narrower, then a slightly broader one. The knop ends in a worn break at this final collar, at the point where it would have attached to the handle, now missing. The disc, collars …

Object type: STRAP END
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Wiltshire
Workflow stage: Published
An almost complete, but damaged, medieval copper-alloy strap-end dating to c. 1275 to 1400. The strap-end consists of two pieces of copper-alloy sheet forming front and back plates. The sheets are long and trapezoidal; they end in a rounded lobe and then a trefoil- or cross-like shape. These last two terminal elements are separated from each other and from the main body of the strap end by a narrowed waist.
The two sheets are fixed together with a copper-alloy rivet in situ, at the lobed terminal. There is another rivet hole through each plate at the opposite (attachment) end, but …

Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Wiltshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A fragment of the front plate of a post-medieval copper alloy book clasp, probably dating to c. 1500-1650. The fragment is rectangular in plan, with one end (the strap attachment end) which is flared and has four triangular indentations. One of the tips of this flared edge is missing due to an old break. The opposite end of the plate (the hook end) is missing. The break here is worn, but it is straight and square.
At the attachment end there are two equally-sized holes, arranged transversely and each sitting within a stamped circle. The two holes are close enough for the stamped ci…
