Record ID: WILT-B73031
Object type: QUERN
Broad period: IRON AGE
County: Wiltshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A fragment hemi-ovoid shaped Sarsen saddle or grinding quernstone dating to period c. 800 BC- AD 410. Half of the quern is missing. The upper surface is longitudinally concave. In the concavity is a small circular recess possibly part of its original function or later reuse.
There is iron staining on the incomplete quern suggesting that the quern may have been used for iron working. Tap slag from iron smelting has been recovered from the field, perhaps supporting this suggestion.
The object measures 274mm in max length and 67mm in maximum thickness.
