An incomplete copper-alloy Roman Hod Hill brooch, dating to c. AD 43-70. The pin is missing and only a small fragment of the head plate survives, to one side. The upper section of the bow is 1.90mm thick and is decorated with two shallow transverse grooves. It is not possible to say with certainty whether or not it originally had side lugs, though it is likely to be a form without side lugs (see Hattatt 2000, 320). The foot tapers gradually to 1.39 mm and has a rounded terminal knob. The reverse of the foot bears the remains of a very worn catch-plate. The brooch has been slightly tw…

A fragment of a medieval (1250-1350) silver-gilt annular brooch consisting of an incomplete sexfoil boss and a section of frame soldered to the reverse. The boss is in the form of a six petalled flower with a central pellet, each pellet and the centre being concave to the front (and convex to the reverse). Two adjacent petals are damaged by the same curving break, diagonally across each; the break looks old. The front of the boss has a thick layer of gilding. To the reverse a curving 16.29mm long section of the annular lozenge-sectioned frame is soldered, an old break at either en…

A complete but squashed silver thimble dating to the early post-medieval period (1600-1700). The thimble is formed in two parts - the top is a shallow dome which is soldered onto the main body which was constructed from a single sheet of silver (c. 0.65 mm thick) wrapped around to form a tapered cylinder. There is an overlapping join on one side which is now partially split open. The centre of the dome has a central undecorated tonsure (5.2 mm in diameter), from which four bands of punch marks (mostly square in shape) radiate out and increase in size from the centre to the edge of th…

An incomplete post-medieval (1500-1700) copper alloy buckle plate, consisting of the upper decorated half only. Originally the plate would have consisted of one copper-alloy sheet, cut and folded transversely at the centre. This example is broken in half at the point where it would have folded around the buckle frame leaving two undecorated tabs extending from the decorated plate (for a complete example see WMID-389B1E). The plate has incurved long edges and a tri-lobed short end opposite to the tabs. The plate is decorated on the front with foliate decoration in the form of a centra…

The object measures 22.9x15.7mm wide at the open end and 19.3x12.9 mm at the base. It stands 15.0 mm tall and is slightly squashed which has distorted the base. The wall thickness ranges from 2.3 mm (including internal concretions) at the base to 1.4 mm towards the upper rim. There is no obvious casting seam. The object weighs 12.12 g. The opposite face has a sub-circular central section which is decorated with a raised cross-hatched pattern with the letter 'S' at the centre. Traces of a shallow rectangle h…

Slight shadow (shallowing of the metal) of the handle is visible just under the rivet holes extending centrally to the top of the break. This widest point (49.52 mm) is at the shoulders.
