An incomplete and abraded cast copper alloy late Saxon stirrup strap-mount of Williams' Class B, Type 3, Group 4 dating from the Early Medieval period, c.1000-1100. A close parallel is described in Williams (1997) on p.94, no.438 and illustrated on p.92, in fig.57. The mount is openwork and zoomorphic in form and would have originally been of trapezoidal shape. There are five oval and sub-rectangular holes surrounding the moulded central head with an iron rivet surviving in the bottom right corner of the mount and the other one missing from the bottom left corner where the mount has b…

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Incomplete cast copper alloy Colchester type one-piece brooch, missing the spring, pin and part of the catchplate. The bifid wings at the head of the brooch have worn to points where they would have held the spring at the back of the head. The spring would have attached to a hook at the front of the brooch, just at the crest of the bow where a circular copper alloy rivet remains, 2.6 mm in diameter, that held the hook plate. The bow of the brooch is slim and ovate in section, 4 mm wide and 3 mm thick below the rivet, with a groove down the centre of the back from the rivet to the begi…

A copper alloy farthing token of Richard Rogers of Helston, dated to 1658 on the obverse which is not usual. The obverse bears the Mercers' arms, a portrait of a mermaid, and the inscription RICHARD ROGERS 1658, but the letters ERS have been overstamped over ROG so that the surname is condensed. The reverse inscription IN HELSTON can just be seen around an inner circle with the initials R / R T arranged in a triangle, with the first R at the apex of the triangle. A token by Richard Rogers of Helston is referenced in Coins and Tokens of Cornwall 1985 on p.26, no.6 (20), dated to 1668, …

Object type: COIN WEIGHT
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Cornwall
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A small cast copper alloy sub-hexagonal late Medieval French uniface coin weight. On one surface of the object, there is a raised motif comprising a crowned shield with three fleur-de-lis within, much abraded. The other surface is plain. Fifteenth-century French coin weights for the Ecu d'or bear a shield with three fleur-de-lis and are hexagonal in shape. The weight at 1.85 g suggests that it represents half of an ecu, which weighed 3.5 g. Withers (1995) illustrate similar examples on page 39 which are dated from c.1422-1475 and discuss the weights on p.70.

Object type: STRAP END
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A copper alloy strap end consisting of two pear-shaped plates joined at the broad end by a trefoil shaped knop. A copper alloy rivet runs through the narrow ends of the plates to fix it to the strap, a fragment of which survives between them. The strap end was once quite heavily gilded with incised decoration on both plates. Substantial traces of the gilding remain, but the item is also quite corroded and the exact motif of the decoration is unclear, but it appears to be foliate.
Read (2016) illustrates mounts with separate rivets and foliate decoration and trefoil terminals on p…

A copper alloy mount in the shape of an elaborate quatrefoil, so-called because the four rounded lobes are separated by a triangular point between each lobe. The mount is flat with two integral pointed attachment lugs on the reverse, one of which is bent over. There may once have been a design on the front face, but it has largely worn away. The back is flat and undecorated.
Read (2001) illustrates a similar mount on p.39, no.278, which is dated from the 17th century.

This example here still has traces of gilding on the face as well. The hook is incomplete, with the tip broken off. Read dates mounts of this Class A, Type 2 to the e…

A complete cast copper alloy casket key dating from the Medieval period, from the late 12th to the early 14th century. The bow is circular above a cylindrical collar delineated with grooves on either side where it joins the shank, which is solid and oval shaped in cross section. The bit extends from the terminal end of the shank. Two clefts are cut out of the bit on either side, creating a worn H shape. The end of the shank is solid and pointed. A similar key can be seen in Read (2016) on p.76, no.539, which is dated from the late 12th to the early 14th century.

Roman copper alloy sestertius, extremely corroded, identified by its size (29 mm in diameter) and the size of the head. Imperial sestertii were issued from the beginning of the Empire to about AD 270 (Reece and James, 2000, p.17). The legends are illegible, and the surfaces worn and missing but on the obverse the head appears to be facing right. In the 2nd century, sestertii are often seen to have one or more straight sides and this coin is round, which probably makes it earlier rather than later, c.AD 81-138.
