Object type: HERALDIC DEVICE
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Cornwall
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An incomplete enamelled copper alloy heraldic mount, probably from a chest or casket. Half of the mount is missing. Quatrefoil in plan with shallower rounded projections between the four main petals. The mount is decorated on the front face with a central shield, probably originally halved and divided horizontally across 'per fess', as the arrowheads in the lower half are too stunted not to have extended into full-length arrows in the missing lower section, rather than being pheons. The two arrowheads are pointing left against a cross-hatched background. Above the arrows in the upper …

Roman copper alloy sestertius of Faustina I (c.AD 141-161), Reece Period 7, AVGVSTA S C reverse type depicting Ceres holding corn ears and a short torch, pointing upwards but slightly to the right. The coin is very worn and has been heavily cleaned, so no details of the legends can be seen. Cf. RIC Vol.III, p.162, no.1117; BMC Vol. IV, p.242, pl.36, fig.4, no.1513.

Object type: BUCKLE
Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL
County: Cornwall
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Small sub-circular copper alloy buckle of Early Medieval date, probably Saxon. The buckle frame is almost circular in plan and oval in section except for the narrower straight section which is the pin bar. There is no sign of a pin rest on the frame, but there is a slight ridge on either side of the inner face of the pin bar, clearly to hold a broad pin in place. The buckle is undecorated. The style seems to match most closely the shield pin type of brooch illustrated by Cuddeford (2001) on p.14, no.1 from West Stow, which is dated from c.AD 420-650. But other examples on the datab…

An incomplete silver 2 reales of Felipe III (1598-1621) of Spain, possibly from the Grenada mint. The coin is heavily clipped all round the edge removing any trace of inscription. The obverse has two small shields, the upper one with five pellets and the lower one with a central longitudinal line, mounted on to a large shield of the arms of Spain, all within a double linear border, which divides it from the legend that is missing. The reverse has a plain cross with alternate lions and castles in the angles of the cross, all within a double tressure of arches. Similar examples from Gre…

Copper alloy strap end, tapering and flat in section, consisting of a piece of sheet metal folded over lengthways with an open end where the fitting would have been attached to the strap. One half of the attachment end is almost complete with a circular rivet hole in the centre of the widest point. The other half has broken off just below where the matching rivet hole would have been, although according to Egan and Pritchard (2002) p.130, the strap ends that were folded lengthways often only had one rivet hole to attach it to the strap. The terminal of the strap end has a small trefoi…

An arm of a copper-alloy dagger guard (quillon) of Medieval date (c.1200-1400). The fragment includes the whole of one arm and half of the central rectangular aperture where the dagger blade would have fitted. The other arm has broken off. The arm is circular in section and tapers in width from the central block and then expands to form a terminal which is circular in shape when viewed from the end. It appears that the arm is formed of a core wrapped around by a covering of sheet metal, with an open seam line visible on one face. It is very similar to another example on the database …

A tin-plated cast copper alloy barley twist mouthpiece from a horse's two-piece snaffle bit. The bar has two incomplete loops at either end. The smaller loop, 21 mm in diameter, has one arm broken off completely, but the loop appears to have been intentionally penannular, with the ends smoothly pointed, while the other loop is heavier duty and is actually broken. This loop also has a groove created by wear across one surface of the loop, presumably where the bridle ring rubbed against the metal. The bar would have been attached to another matching bar at one end, forming the actual bi…

Cast copper alloy foot of a cauldron leg, broken off where it would have extended into the leg of the vessel. The foot is triangular in plan and profile, D-shaped in section, with a flat back, narrow at the top with three roughly cast oblique ribs running down the front face of the claw foot and expanding with the foot as it triangulates. The foot fans out and appears to have had ribs or borders at either edge where there is damage and wear. The base of the foot has cavities which may be originally from mis-casting and then have been worn through use so that only the front edge is stil…
