A copper alloy mount in the shape of an elaborate quatrefoil, so-called because the four rounded lobes are separated by a triangular point between each lobe. The mount is flat with two integral pointed attachment lugs on the reverse, one of which is bent over. There may once have been a design on the front face, but it has largely worn away. The back is flat and undecorated. Read (2001) illustrates a similar mount on p.39, no.278, which is dated from the 17th century.

A cast copper alloy mount, almost square with a square central boss pressed out from behind. The boss has straight chamfered sides and projects about 2 mm from the frame of the mount, and appears to have been decorated with a flower with rounded petals. The back of the mount has two integral lugs, 4 mm long and 3 mm thick, placed centrally on either side which may be the bases of attachment spikes or may have once been joined to form a loop to incorporate a strap, as the stumps appear to be bending inwards towards each other. The face of the mount has traces of a black lacquering, an…

Cast copper alloy mount dating from the Post-medieval period. It is hexagonal in plan, with the stubs of two curved attachment lugs projecting from the rear which appear to have been cast integrally. The mount is cast in the shape of a Tudor rose, decorated in relief on the front face with a 6 petalled flower, alternating with six rounded leaves, inside a tressured border, accentuated by small knops at the points of the hexagon. The surface is badly corroded and if it was originally gilded, as seems likely, there are no remaining traces. The use of the Tudor rose motif suggests a date…

A cast copper alloy mount dating from the Post-medieval period, dating from the 17th century. The mount consists of an acorn shaped plate with two pointed integral lugs on the reverse. The mount is slightly convex in profile, and concave at the back, with cross hatched decoration on the lower half of the face, to suggest the acorn's cupule, and a knopped tip. The stem of the acorn bends sharply to one side at a right angle and terminates in a point. For similar mounts on the PAS database see IOW-083024 and IOW-06FCB3. Mounts of a similar form and style have been published by Brian …

Circular tin alloy (pewter) mount or ferrule consisting of a rectangular strip soldered into a ring, decorated on the outer face with a line of lozenges or diamond shapes forming a band between parallel raised borders around the circumference of the ring. The decoration has been formed by pressing the strip against a pattern while rolling it through a mill. The ring is flat in section and is likely a mount from a utensil of some kind, for example, covering the junction between a handle and a knife blade. The style and manufacture suggests a Post-medieval date. A similar mount can b…

A cast copper alloy Post-medieval asymmetrical strap fitting dating from c.1600-1700. The mount consists of a convex cordate (heart-shaped) plate which is surmounted by a fleur-de-lys shaped terminal consisting of two lobes flanking a central elongated knop. Either lobe features an off centre circular aperture that is 3 mm in diameter. The reverse is concave, with the stubs of two integral pointed lugs projecting from the reverse to a height of 2 mm, each seated on a small round blob of metal. The overall shape of the mount is reminiscent of the Merovingian bee motif, where the heart …

Cast copper alloy mount with two integral hooked lugs on the reverse at the top and bottom of the mount, curving away from the centre. The item is in the shape of a stylised blossoming flower. Petals branch out from a central lozenge shaped knop which may represent the pistil of the flower with a triangular receptacle at the base of the petals. The petals are marked with grooves and the receptacle is delineated with diagonal grooves separating it from the petals above. The mount is patinated with the pinky brown of the abraded copper surface showing through and it appears to have been…

A cast copper alloy stud with a lozenge-shaped head that is plano-convex in profile, dating from the late Medieval to the early Post-medieval period. The head is decorated on the upper face with a saltire cross formed of pellets radiating from the centre within a square of pellets. The square sits diagonally within a beaded border that forms the edge of the stud. On the reverse is a pointed shaft of square cross-section, the tip of which has broken off, now 4.5 mm long and 3 mm wide at its base. This mount has a parallel in an example illustrated in Read (2001, pp.27 & 32, fig.17, no.…

Cast copper alloy rectangular bar mount with two integral pointed lugs on the back that are 2 mm in length. The mount is plano-convex in section with a flat back and a convex front face with a grooved border that is 1 mm in from the edge. Most of the original patina survives so there does not appear to be any more decoration. Read (2001) illustrates a small bar mount with two integral rivets on page 11, fig.7, no.70 ( which is 11 x 7 mm), and states that although mounts with integral rivets are generally dated from the 15th century to the 16th century, no.70 is 'plausibly c.1270 to…
