A silver voided long cross cut half penny of Henry III (1216-1272), Long cross coinage (1247-1272), Class IIIa (1248-1250). The legend begins at 12 o'clock, which places it within Classes I - IVb, and the moneyer is Willem and the mint is Northampton (NORh), and Willem was moneyer in Northampton when coins from Class IIa and IIIa-c were produced. The coin has been cut down the middle of the king's head, preserving the right side and the inscription hENRICVS, with the N and R ligated. The reverse carries the first three letters of the moneyer's name WIL and the last three letters of th…

Silver cut half of a voided long cross penny of Henry III (1216-1272), Class II (1248), minted at Exeter. The letters NR are ligatured in the obverse legend and their position around the bust suggests the rest of the legend would have been [*h]ENRICVS [REX TERCI]. The only letters from the mint signature visible on the reverse are [PhI/LIP]/ON/ECC, which suggests the moneyer might be Philip, Robert or Walter, who all have six letters and minted Class II pennies in Exeter.

A silver cut half of a voided long cross penny of Henry III (1216-1272), Class 3b or 3c (1248-1250), struck at the Newcastle mint. The moneyer's name is not present, but the men operating from the Newcastle mint at the time of Class III were Roger, Adam, Henri and Ion (North, 1994, Vol.1, p.226, nos.987-988) and there is room for 5 letters so the moneyer is either Roger or Henri. The obverse is cut vertically through the crowned head, but the star initial mark is visible above the central fleur of the crown. There is a apostrophe after the numerals III and a stop before it but not a c…

A silver cut half of a short cross penny of John (1199-1216). The coin belongs to Class 6a1, dating from 1210-1213, identified by the shape of the letter X in REX, which Wren (1992, p.55) describes as being formed from two thin straight strokes with the limbs arranged as a flattish saltire and not at right angles to each other. The coin is cut vertically through the obverse, showing the king's head with two equal sized curls on the left side. The inscription remaining on the reverse reads [WA]LTER.O[NLV], so the moneyer is Walter. The London mint is assumed because Walter's name does …

Silver cut half of a short cross penny of John (1199-1216), Class Vb1 (c.1205), London mint. The coin has been cut horizontally across the portrait face on the obverse, and the visible part of the inscription reads [hENRIC]VS R/E[X]. The S has a pellet in centre, which suggests that the coin is of Class 5b1 (Mass 2001, 35. fig 2). Very little of the face is visible, but a particular feature is the hand holding the sceptre is shown almost directly under the centre of the collar, whereas in most of these coins the hand is aligned with the left of the collar. Mass illustrates an example …

A silver cut half of a voided long cross penny of Henry III (1216-1272), Long cross coinage (1247-1272), Class IIIc (1248-1250) with short beard and pellet-footed 'R'. The obverse inscription begins at 12 o'clock, which indicates that the class belongs to I-III, and on the reverse the inscription reads [A]SO/NG/, which suggests that the moneyer was Lucas (Class IIb-IIIc) and the mint Gloucester. The full inscription would therefore have read LVC/ASO/NG/LOV.

Silver cur half of a voided long cross penny of Henry III (1216-1272), Class IIIa (1248-1250). The mint is Gloucester and the moneyer is ION. ION was one of four moneyers in Gloucester whose name appears on coins of Class IIb to Class IIIc. The legend on the obverse is hENRICVS REX.III, a version which was introduced with Class III, and this combined with the form of the beard (four small pellets on either side of a larger central pellet on the chin) and the lack of a sceptre or hand in the portrait puts it in Class IIIa. The inscription on the reverse reads ION/[ON/GLO]VCE, so it can…

A silver cut half of a voided long cross penny of Henry III (1216 - 1272), Long cross coinage (1247-1272). The half with the moneyer's name is missing, but the obverse inscription begins at 12 o'clock, which indicates that the class belongs to I - III, without the sceptre, and on the reverse the inscription reads /NG/LOV, which suggests the Gloucester mint. The moneyers in Gloucester were ION, LUC/AS, RIC/ARD and ROG/ER, all of whom only minted Classes IIb - IIIc. Because of the spacing of the reverse inscription which splits O from N in the word ON, there would only have been room fo…

Silver cut half of a voided long cross penny of Henry III (1216-1272), Long cross coinage (1247-1272) with part of one quarter broken off. The moneyer is Nicole and the mint is London and the Class II, III or IV, as the king's name begins at 12 o'clock, and in Class V the name begins at 10 o'clock. The shape of the curls and the way that the N and R are ligatured and the R has a pellet foot, suggests it is Class IVa or IVab which dates to c.1250 (Wren, 1993, 54-55).

Silver cut half of a voided long cross penny of Henry III (1216-1272), Long Cross Coinage (1247-1272), Class IIa (1248), moneyer Nicole, Canterbury mint. The coin is cut diagonally from 11 o'clock to 5 o'clock, showing most of the crown and two large curls at the right side of the head. The crown has three pearls across the forehead, underneath a thick band, and the fleur-de-lis in the centre of the crown is reduced to two round pellets on either side of a larger pellet, each connected by a short arm. This suggests that the coin belongs to Class II, as later classes have a more conven…

Silver cut half of a short cross penny of King John (1199-1216), Class Vb2 (1205-1207), with one corner broken off. The bust is only partially visible, but the condition of the coin is good, and the two ringlets with pellets in the centre at the side of the head, the fine even strokes representing the beard and the division by the hand holding the sceptre of the word REX between the R and EX on the obverse indicate the coin belongs to Class Vb, and because the remaining eye is not broken it has to be Class Vb2, which dates it from 1205 to 1207. The part of the inscription on the rever…
