A copper alloy cruciform brooch dating to the early medieval period (AD525-570). The brooch is broken in two parts and is almost complete except for a small portion of the headplate and most of the pin on the reverse. The sub-square headplate (39.2mm x 39.4mm) has a distinct rectangular plate (24.2mm x 30mm) set in relief at its centre, the bottom edge of this rectangle meeting the top of the bow. The upper face of this rectangle appears to have traces of indistinct decoration, an element of which may be several incised lines. Contained within is a further, slightly less upstanding re…

An incomplete copper-alloy proto-headstud brooch, dating to the early Romano-British period (c.AD45-120). The brooch spring is formed from a length of copper alloy wire which extends from the rear brooch head and has been coiled to form a spring of six turns in total: the wire is coiled around the axis bar for three turns, and is then turns to become the integral external chord looping (and thus securing the spring) just below the head of the brooch, before looping a further three times around the axis bar, becoming the pin at the central point. Only a very short portion (2.88mm)…
