Broad period: ROMAN
County: Wiltshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An incomplete late Roman copper alloy spoon fragment dating to AD 200-410. At the top, the attachment to which the shaft would have been still exists, but the shaft and the probe end are missing. There are two small rounded perforations which puncture all the way through the material and there is evidence of gilded silver on both anterior and posterior surfaces. The anterior surface has a central ridge which starts about o…

An incomplete copper alloy gilded pin of an uncertain date. A broadly similar parallel can be found in Egan and Pritchard (1991) "Dress Accessories" page 300 No,1476 which suggests a medieval date is possible. Overall, the pin is badly corroded, but the head of the pin can be surely identified as a pentagonal head with five points, four of which form the sides of the shape, and the fifth located at the top of the head. From each of the four side points are fine ridges which follow upwards, towards the central point at the top of the shape. Where the head of the pin has been fixed …

A copper-alloy medieval circular half noble coin weight, dating between the 15th and 16 centuries. The obverse portrays an image of a ship, and the reverse surface appears to have 4 scratch marks upon it. Similar examples to this coin weight can be seen in Withers (1995) "Lions, Ships and Angels" , bottom of page 18. It could be possible that this object could be a noble with a ship with lis and Lion, (top of page 19) however, the coin weight is damaged rather significantly.
