Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An incomplete cast copper-alloy medieval to post medieval double looped buckle, dating to the period AD c.1350-c.1650. (I want to put a later start date but have no reason as to why it should) It is incomplete insofar as the pin is missing. The buckle is oval in shape, measuring 19.29mm in length, 35.23mm in width and 2.43mm thick. It weighs 5.15g. The frame is slightly recessed from the front, and has no discernible decoration on either side. There are parallels in Whitehead (2003) p53, particularly no.292, but considering the lack of detail on this buckle a parallel is largely spec…

An incomplete cast copper-alloy medieval D-shaped single looped buckle, dating to the period AD c. 1250 to c. 1400. The buckle is incomplete insofar as the pin is missing. It is broadly rectangular in shape, with ornate outer edges and the frame thicker on the left hand side (5.44mm) than the right (2.21mm). Object type: QUERN
Broad period: ROMAN
County: Wiltshire
Workflow stage: Published Find published
An incomplete Roman puddingstone beehive quern stone, dating to the period AD 1-150 There are a few types of Puddingstone, Green (2017) suggests that it is French and has been imported. A possible suggestion for this importation is that the stones used for this conglomerate are extremely hard, so hard over in Hertfordshire that it was very difficult to use, but due to its tough exterior, it produced almost grit free flour, therefore a much demanded product (Green 2017). French stones are earlier than Hertfordshire products, and were in fact the basis of a whole industry, as it spre…

On the base o…

A fully complete copper alloy late Iron Age or Roman strip bow brooch, dating to the period AD 25-70. The wings of the brooch are tubular in shape and in cross section which fold and then roll forward. Within this component is the central aperture and the pin. On the narrowest point of the bow, it extends down to the foot, where the catch plate can almost hold the pin in its original position. The bow is rather thin and delica…
