A very worn Roman copper-alloy coin, probably a sestertius (from its weight) of Domitian (81-96). The reverse is completely worn, the obverse showing a right-facing bust. No inscription survives, and the mint is uncertain. Reece period 4 (Flavian). The obverse and reverse both exhibit round drill marks as if attempts were made to pierce the coin, although in neither case is a hole present. An incomplete copper alloy Roman surgical or toilet instrument ('spoon probe') dating from c. AD 100-300. The implement has an elongated spoon-like terminal with a ridge running along its length on the reverse. The terminal narrows to the shaft which has double collars either side of a bulbous swelling. The shaft is broken and missing. Crummy (Crummy, N 1983 Colchester Archaeological Report 2: The Roman Small Finds from Excavations in Colchester 1971-9, Colchester Archaeological Trust) describes implements such as this as 'spoon-probes' and states that they are not a common site …

An incomplete copper alloy buckle of late Roman date c. AD 350 - 430. (See Hawkes & Dunning 1961 Type IB) The object has a curved bar with two outwards facing horses' heads. These are C shaped with curved necks, sub triangular heads and small rounded projections for ears with detail picked out by incised decoration. An incomplete cast copper Roman alloy seal box dating from late 1st to the mid 3rd Century AD. The seal box is circular in plan and is missing its lid, which was often enamelled. The box has four circular holes in the base and the remains of two lugs which formed the hinge mechanism and opposite, the hole for the latch to keep the box closed. The box is undecorated. Seal boxes are believed to have served to protect the (often impressed) lump of wax which held together the bindings of a packet or writing tablet. An incomplete cast copper alloy pole-mounted skirted terret ring of Roman date. The terret has a conical hollow skirt as its base into which the pole would have been inserted. On either side of the skirt are two projections, possibly intended to be animal (bull?) horns. At the peak of the skirt is the remains of the rein loop which is rectangular in cross section narrowing in thickness as it progresses around the loop. There is no decoration. A complete late Roman copper alloy 'amphora' strap end, probably dating to c. AD 300-409. So-called because of its shape, the strap end is broadly piriform in plan, tapering to a point with a collared acorn style terminal knop at the foot. At the 'top' of the amphora are two oval apertures representing the handles and expanding neck with horizontal aperture to form the rim and top of the jug. An incomplete cast copper alloy spoon handle of Roman date, AD 100 -150. The fragment consists of a handle of circular cross-section and the C shaped offset or dogleg linking it to the now missing pear-shaped bowl. There are two notches above the offset, which is rectangular in cross-section. The handle tapers to a point away from the bowl end but the terminal is now broken and missing. There is no decoration. A similar spoon is illustrated in Crummy (1983, 70) as well as other more complete examples are also recorded on the PAS database e.g. BERK-86D87B.

An incomplete, possible Roman iron knife, with integral tang. The knife has a straight back (some damage above the tang/blade junction) and the blade (also damaged) is slightly convex, rising to the now-missing tip. Similar examples have been recorded at Hod Hill, Dorset, and are dated to the mid-first century AD however the style would have had a long life span (Manning 1982:114). Incomplete late Roman copper alloy strap end, c. AD 350-409. The strap end has two incomplete lozenge-shaped plates separated by a transverse neck with rectangular projections. No decoration is evident. There appears to be a rivet thought on of the plate - presumably to aid attachment to a strap, or possibly a repair. The strap end fits into a class of object associated with a late Roman date, often with military connections.

The strap end is somewhere between a heart-shaped and amphora strap end, with rounded, almost bifurcated lower end reminiscent of nail clear / strap ends. The strap end has incised decoration.
