Object type: MINIATURE OBJECT
Broad period: ROMAN
County: Wiltshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
An incomplete Roman iron miniature spear, dating to the period AD 330-410. What remains is the spear and the shaft, measuring 196.22mm in length and weighs 31.51g in total. The miniature spear appears to be broadly circular in cross-section, but this is unclear as heavy corrosion obscures much of the original shape. Small stones have also become attached to the corrosion, obscuring the shape further. At the widest part, the spear measures 12.06mm wide and 14.09mm thick.
The spear head is broadly leaf shaped, measuring 37.26mm in length, 12.36mm at maximum width, and is 6.25mm thick. I…

Object type: SOCKETED AXEHEAD
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Wiltshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A fragment of a copper-alloy Late Bronze Age socketed axehead, dating to the period 1100 BC- 800 BC. All that remains of this axehead is the cutting edge, blade tip and part of the blade. It is possibly a Penard/Wilburton type, though exact categorisation is difficult as only a small portion of the axehead remains. The fragment measures 30.15mm in length and 35.63mm at maximum width on the cutting edge, before tapering down to 29.22mm on the blade. What remains of the axehead is triangular in cross-section. The patina is quite smooth, and light green in colour. The cutting edge has wor…

Object type: JETTON
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Hampshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A copper-alloy object, possibly a Jetton, of an uncertain ruler and date. On the obverse, the legend reads [cross] DENIER AD IV, encircling a forward facing bust, wearing a cap. The innermost circle is comprised of evenly spaced and broadly oval notches, and measures 15.84mm in diameter. The obverse has similarities to the bust of nos. 161-162, but the legends are different. On the reverse, there is no discernible decoration. The legend and lack of direct parallels could indicate that this is a coin.

Five, probably type 4, medieval horseshoes and four spikes, possibly for the removal of horseshoes, dating to the period AD 1250-1550. Only one horseshoe may have a nail in situ, but otherwise the horseshoes are complete. It is unlikely that these were from the same horse, not just because there are five, but due to the different sizes and weights of each shoe. Clark's "The Medieval Horse and its Equipment" (1995) indicates that horses were not always shod on all four feet (p76), but on two instead. This would also support the conclusion that these shoes were not all from one animal. …

A fragment of a medieval cast copper-alloy strap fitting or harness fitting, dating to the period c. AD 1450-1600. It measures 44.82mm in length and 15.87mm in width, the thickness of the fitting is 1.56mm, but the loop is 9.06mm thick. It also weighs 6.09g.
The fitting consists of an oval loop, measuring 4.78mm. There are four spiked protrusions, two either side, measuring 10.36mm and 12.94mm wide. In between the set of spikes there is a semicircular curve. The rest of the fitting is broadly rectangular in shape, with two perforations measuring 2.41mm in diameter. One is at the …

A contemporary native copy copper-alloy Roman As of the Emperor Claudius I dating to the period AD 41 - 54 (Reece Period 2). Minerva walking right with spear and shield, with S to her left and C to her right. roRobert Kenyon, following on from the work by the French scholars P-A. Besombes and M. Bompaire (in Trésors Monétaires XXI, 2005), is working through the British examples of Claudian coinage recorded through the PAS assigning many so-called Claudian contemporary copies to Roman auxiliary mints which operated at Lyons (Gaul) and in Spain. This example is a native copy.

The mount has rivet hole at its apex, and two further rivet holes at the base, one either side. The mount has an oval body, which is framed by a pair of ribbon-form beasts whose tails curl into spirals, flanking the pointed lobe above the apex rivet. A mostly complete medieval copper alloy folding clasp dating to c.AD1350 - 1400. The folding clasp is 36.20mm in length and 11.41mm in width, and appears to be comprised of two folded sheets of metal, held together by a well concealed rivet. The sheet roller is missing.
This is a sub rectangular folding clasp, 25.35mm from the edge of the plate to the bar of the clasp. The meeting point of the clasp and the plates is also where the folding clasp is at its narrowest, measuring at 7.35mm. The folding clasp then remains at this width to the end. The two plates are not even in length, …
