Object type: SOCKETED AXEHEAD
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Wiltshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A fragment of a copper-alloy Late Bronze Age socketed axehead, dating to the period 1100 BC- 800 BC. All that remains of this axehead is the cutting edge, blade tip and part of the blade. It is possibly a Penard/Wilburton type, though exact categorisation is difficult as only a small portion of the axehead remains. The fragment measures 30.15mm in length and 35.63mm at maximum width on the cutting edge, before tapering down to 29.22mm on the blade. What remains of the axehead is triangular in cross-section. The patina is quite smooth, and light green in colour. The cutting edge has wor…

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
An incomplete post-medieval cast copper-alloy, double loop oval buckle with iron pin, dating to period AD 1550-1650. It is incomplete insofar as part of the pin is missing. The frame has two spherical knops, one either side, on the outer edge of the loop, with a lobed knop either end of the strap bar. The frame measures 41.69mm in width and 22.39mm in length. What remains of the pin is made of iron, as evidenced by the corrosion on the pin and where the pin would have rested prior to the break. The pin now measures 19.58mm in length and 4.34mm in width. At its thickest the frame measu…

Five, probably type 4, medieval horseshoes and four spikes, possibly for the removal of horseshoes, dating to the period AD 1250-1550. Only one horseshoe may have a nail in situ, but otherwise the horseshoes are complete. It is unlikely that these were from the same horse, not just because there are five, but due to the different sizes and weights of each shoe. Clark's "The Medieval Horse and its Equipment" (1995) indicates that horses were not always shod on all four feet (p76), but on two instead. This would also support the conclusion that these shoes were not all from one animal. …
