Object type: STRAP END
Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL
County: Hampshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An incomplete middle to late early-medieval copper-alloy strap end, dating to the period 750-1050. It is a Thomas Class B, Type 1, characterised by transverse mouldings and a possible zoomorphic terminal. The strap end measures 37.61mm in length and 8.62mm in width. It has a split end and slightly tapering shaft. It is difficult to ascertain on this particular strap-end whether the terminal is zoomorphic as the moulding is very worn. Of the split end only the reverse plate remains, the front appearing to have been broken in antiquity as the break is worn. There is a chance it may neve…

The thickness of the stirrup mount is 4.33mm at the iron rivet, with the main body of the stirrup mount being 2.53mm. The decoration on the mount is of two addorsed beasts joined by a central knot beneath the pendant lobe, which is seen here with an iron rivet, remaining in situ. There appears to be an incised groove which extends from the two beasts up and a…

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A complete cast copper-alloy late early-medieval mount, dating to the period 950-1100. It is sub-triangular in shape, measuring 28.62mm in length and 30.21mm in width. The thickness is 2.09mm, and it is concavo-convex in profile (the reverse being concave). The front of the mount has Viking Ringerike-style decoration, with a round, iron rivet still in situ in each corner (each in a state of corrosion). Each side of the triangle has two cusps, creating a triangular projection in between each cusp. One of these projections has been damaged, resulting in a V-shaped notch. A raised rim f…

A complete late early-medieval, copper-alloy zoomorphic strap-end, dating to the period 1000-1100. It is a strap-end of Thomas' Class G, measuring 33.49mm in length and 10.16mm at maximum width. It is parallel-sided with a wedge-shaped split end but missing most of its openwork tongue which would have depicted a sinuous beast with an asymmetrically interlaced body. This would have emerged from the protruding animal mask located at the narrower end of the wedge-shaped body, opposite to the split end. At this point (just before the mask) the body is at its narrowest, measuring 5.87mm wi…

Object type: BUCKLE
Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL
County: Wiltshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An incomplete buckle frame of probably late early-medieval to early medieval date (c. 1000-1200). It is triangular in shape consisting of two outside edges and the bar. Extensions of the frame either side of the bar, now terminating in old breaks, suggest these originally extended, perhaps into another loop of similar shape. The frame is oval in cross-section with the addition of a ridge at the centre of the two outside edges. This is moulded into a row of single knops with worn grooves between. The oval-sectioned frame behind has similar moulded and grooved decoration in alignment wi…

A complete copper-alloy polyhedral-headed pin of Early-Medieval date (AD 410-1066). The head measures 4.1mm wide on each side and is formed from a cuboid with its corners cut off. Each face is decorated by a single punched ring-and-dot, except for the face from which the shank extends (which is undecorated). Aside from the ring-and-dots, there is no other decoration on the pin. There is also no collar between the head and the shaft of the pin, instead the head connects to the shaft, which tapers after one bend to a point. Only a few small patches of original dark green patina survives…

Within the mount is an inlaid garnet or red glass rectangular shape, 9mm in length by 5.51mm in width, which is framed by zoomorphic designs.
