Object type: MINIATURE OBJECT
Broad period: ROMAN
County: Wiltshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An incomplete Roman iron miniature spear, dating to the period AD 330-410. What remains is the spear and the shaft, measuring 196.22mm in length and weighs 31.51g in total. The miniature spear appears to be broadly circular in cross-section, but this is unclear as heavy corrosion obscures much of the original shape. Small stones have also become attached to the corrosion, obscuring the shape further. At the widest part, the spear measures 12.06mm wide and 14.09mm thick. The spear head is broadly leaf shaped, measuring 37.26mm in length, 12.36mm at maximum width, and is 6.25mm thick. I…

A fragment of a copper-alloy Late Bronze Age socketed axehead, dating to the period 1100 BC- 800 BC. All that remains of this axehead is the cutting edge, blade tip and part of the blade. It is possibly a Penard/Wilburton type, though exact categorisation is difficult as only a small portion of the axehead remains. The fragment measures 30.15mm in length and 35.63mm at maximum width on the cutting edge, before tapering down to 29.22mm on the blade. What remains of the axehead is triangular in cross-section. The patina is quite smooth, and light green in colour. The cutting edge has wor…

Object type: JETTON
Broad period: MEDIEVAL

A copper-alloy object, possibly a Jetton, of an uncertain ruler and date. On the obverse, the legend reads [cross] DENIER AD IV, encircling a forward facing bust, wearing a cap. The innermost circle is comprised of evenly spaced and broadly oval notches, and measures 15.84mm in diameter. The obverse has similarities to the bust of nos. 161-162, but the legends are different. On the reverse, there is no discernible decoration. The legend and lack of direct parallels could indicate that this is a coin. (Mitchiner 1988, 106). Five, probably type 4, medieval horseshoes and four spikes, possibly for the removal of horseshoes, dating to the period AD 1250-1550. Only one horseshoe may have a nail in situ, but otherwise the horseshoes are complete. It is unlikely that these were from the same horse, not just because there are five, but due to the different sizes and weights of each shoe. Clark's "The Medieval Horse and its Equipment" (1995) indicates that horses were not always shod on all four feet (p76), but on two instead. This would also support the conclusion that these shoes were not all from one animal. …

This coin has been deliberately cut with a minimum of three cut down coins being removed from the flan.
