An incomplete copper alloy Roman Polden Hill brooch dating to the period AD 75-175. The pin is missing. It is 46.95mm in length, 25.10 in width and weighs 12.76g.
The wings are circular in cross section, spanning 25.10mm in length and are 6.71mm wide. There are five ridges on the wings, with three grooves in between. The end caps are visible at the end of the wings, which indicate that this is a Polden Hill type brooch. The brooch has a sprung mechanism, with the coils being recessed into the reverse of the wings. This brooch appears to have been repaired at some time, as there are two protrusions from the coil similar to protrusions caused by a broken pin. There are 12 coil loops spanning the length of the wings.
The spring loops over and tucks into the headloop at the top of the bow. The bow steps out first horizontally, then projects downwards at a ninety degree angle. The upper bow is rectangular, with two grooves either side of the two triangular recesses. The top triangle is inverted as the two vertexes face one another. The centre of the bow is decorated with a central button formed from two horizontal ridges. The brooch tapers from the button to the foot, from 4.45mm to 1.97mm. The lower bow appears to be undecorated, and triangular in cross section.
The catchplate is tirangular in cross section and the curl of thet catchplate is complete.
