A gold medieval half-noble of Edward III, dating to the period AD 1346-1351. Third coinage. Obverse depicts the king standing facing forward in a ship, crowned and armoured, he holds a sword in right hand and a shield of England and France in left hand. A copper-alloy Roman radiate of Diocletian struck by Carausius dating to the period c. AD 291-292 (Reece period 14). PAX AVGGG reverse type depicting Pax standing left holding branch and vertical sceptre. Mint of London: S P//MLXXI. As RIC V.2, p. 551, no. 5var. This is the third example of this coin, with obverse legend IMP C DIOCLETIANVS P F AIG, in Sam Moorhead's corpus for RIC. Interestingly, one of the other coins was found in the Harnham Hoard, near Salisbury and now in the Salisbury and South Wiltshire Museum.
