An incomplete Roman Hod Hill brooch, dating to the period AD 43-70. It measures 49.74mm in length and at the side lugs measures 16.89mm in width, though as one of the side lugs is missing the actual width of the brooch would have been approximately 6.4mm wider. The brooch is incomplete insofar as one side lug is missing, along with the shank of the pin. The wings measure 13.26mm in width and 3.47mm in height. They curl forwards to hold the axis bar. The presence of iron corrosion within the wings indicates that the axis bar was made of iron. From the wings extend the bow, measuring…

An iron spherical object, probably dating to the later post-medieval/ early-modern period, of uncertain function. It weighs 136.29g and measures 33.17mm in diameter. The patina is rough and pitted, and dark brown in colour. PAS colleague Sue Walker suggests '[It] could be from an 18th -19th century lawn cannon, most of them have quite small muzzles but nonetheless are fully functional. Or it could be just the decorative shot that sits next to one'. Peter Reavill comments that iron balls such as this were used as a grinding mechanism in mills.
