There are two holes in the coin, on the obverse one is almost in the centre of the rose (measuring 1.68mm diameter), whilst the other is considerably smaller in diameter (measuring 0.69mm in diameter), and is at about 4 o clock.

A gold medieval half-noble of Edward III, dating to the period AD 1346-1351. Third coinage. Obverse depicts the king standing facing forward in a ship, crowned and armoured, he holds a sword in right hand and a shield of England and France in left hand. The reverse depicts a floriated cross with a fleur-de-lys at the end of each arm and an ornamented compartment containing a closed E in centre of cross.
