Object type: CLOTH SEAL
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Oxfordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An incomplete lead cloth seal, possibly for a cloth known as bombazine, and dating to the period 1500-1700. It is incomplete as it is unclear whether it is part of a two or four part seal, though four part seals are more unusual. The cloth seal measures 20.12mm in diameter and weighs 2.74g. One side has the letter "B" next to a crowned possible pair of scissors, all is raised relief; the other side is apparently undecorated. The patina is an off white, with a thin line of dark brown in between the lead.

Object type: BUTTON
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Oxfordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An almost complete lead-alloy discoidal domed (measuring 10.64mm in thickness) button, dating to the period 1400-1600. It is circular in plan, 22.35mm in diameter, and has traces of a circular knop in the centre with curving blades around. The edge is a little damaged. From knop to the end of the loop, it measures 17.47mm. The loop measures 8.55mm in diameter. In total, this button weighs 2.73g. Read (2010, reprint of 2005) illustrates a similar button on page 38, no.130. A late 15th/ 16th century date is suggested for this example.

Object type: MUSKET BALL
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Hampshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A post-medieval lead alloy musket ball, dating to the period 1600-1700. It is 20.32mm in estimated diameter, and weighs 29.83g. The ball has a smooth, yellow-grey patina, and has been flattened on one side. There is a small lip protruding from this flattened side, and is probably the result of casting. Dr Natasha Ferguson writes: "The weights are consistent with musket balls from the 17th - 18th century being around 1oz each. Musket balls bores are measured on the number of balls you can make from a lb of lead, so with 16 oz in a lb that would make it a 16 bore. Both have been impac…
