Object type: LITHIC IMPLEMENT
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: East Riding of Yorkshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A complete flint side and end scraper of Bronze Age date (2350-801BC). The implement is sub-oval in plan and is knapped from a secondary flake with previous removal scars on the dorsal surface and remaining cortex near the left medial edge. There is a pronounced bulb of percussion and erailleur scar indicative of the hard hammer technique. Retouch is relatively crude and uneven which identifies this as a later prehistoric tool (see Butler 2005 p. 166). Short, scaled semi-abrupt retouch extends continuously along the left edge and the distal end. The flint is a light grey with lar…

Object type: SCRAPER (TOOL)
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: East Riding of Yorkshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A complete flint scraper of Bronze Age date (2350-801BC). The scraper is cub-circular in plan and D-shaped in cross-section. It is knapped from a primary flake with further flakes then removed from the dorsal surface. The retouch is relatively crude, sporadic and uneven which identifies this as a later prehistoric tool alongside the large amount of remaining cortex on the dorsal surface (see Butler 2005 p.166). Large flakes have also been removed from the ventral surface leaving several removal scars. On both faces edge retouch is invasive but consists of the removal of large flakes r…

Object type: SCRAPER (TOOL)
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: East Riding of Yorkshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A complete flint possible scraper of broad Bronze Age date (2350-801BC). The implement is sub-triangular and has been knapped from primary tabular or sheet flint (Butler 2005, p.15). It has cortex remaining on both surfaces and no striking platform or bulb of percussion. The knapper appears to have utilised the natural form of the sheet flint and crudely retouched around the edges on both faces to create a possible scraping edge. The retouch is extrememly uneven and sporadic, although is more defined and short scaled and semi-abrupt on two opposite edges The flint is an opaque dark…

Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: East Riding of Yorkshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A complete end and side scraper of Neolithic date (4000-2350BC). This is a D shaped scraper knapped from a secondary flake with previous flake removals on the dorsal surface and remaining cortex along the left lateral edge. The bulb of percussion is very diffuse and there is a distinctive lip on the striking platform, both indicative of the soft hammer percussion technique. This may also tentatively suggest an earlier Neolithic date as soft hammer was used less in the later Neolithic. There is continuous retouch along the left edge, distal end, and halfway up the right edge of the d…

Object type: KNIFE
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: East Riding of Yorkshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A complete flint knife of broad Mesolithic to Early Bronze Age date (10000-1500BC). Knives of this type do not have distinctive period characteristics, with long flakes, unretouched cutting edge, and remaining cortex on the opposite edge present on examples from all periods (see Butler 2005). This example is a concavo-convex knife knapped from a secondary flake with cortex remaining on the right edge and previous long flake removals on the dorsal surface. There is a diffuse bulb of percussion and the small striking platform is still present. The left cutting edge in sharp and unretouc…

A complete hollow scraper of Middle Neolithic to Early Bronze Age date (3000-1500BC). The implement has been knapped from a tertiary flake with multiple removal scars on the dorsal surface and no remaining cortex. The position of these negative scars provide a convenient place for finger placement to comfortably use the scraper. There is a very large bulb of percussion and clear erailleur scar indicative of the hard hammer technique. At the distal end on the ventral surface there is a small area of short stepped semi-abrupt retouch which shapes the end to a point. On the left edge o…

A complete lithic implement of Neolithic to Early Bronze Age date (4000-1500BC). The implement is ovate in both plan and cross-section. It has been knapped from a secondary flake with cortex remaining near the distal end and previous large flake removals on the dorsal surface. The distal end shows heavy stepped abrupt retouch creating a curved edge. There is also short stepped abrupt retouch at the proximal end on the dorsal surface along both edges creating a blunt point. There are also two probable notches, one on each side and with retouch on opposite surfaces. This retouch is shor…

A complete flint piercer of Neolithic to Early Bronze Age date (4000-1500BC). The piercer sub-ovate in plan and D-shaped in cross-section. It has been knapped from a secondary flake, with cortex remaining near the point at the distal end. This suggests the original shape of the flake was convenient for a piercer and the knapper used the form to their advantage. There is a very prominent bulb of percussion and a clear erailleur scar indicative of the hard hammer technique. A long flake has been removed longitudinally down the right of the dorsal surface to create the point for pierci…

A complete side scraper of Neolithic date (4000-2350BC). The scraper is sub-rectangular in plan and has been knapped from a primary flake with subsequent thin flakes then removed across the dorsal surface removing areas of cortex. The flake is triangular in cross-section, and appears to have been removed from the edge of a relatively flat core. There is a diffuse bulb of percussion indicative of soft hammer percussion which suggests this scraper is more likely of earlier Neolithic date. Retouch covers the length of the right edge of the ventral surface, short scaled and semi-abrupt to…

A complete flint notched scraper of Neolithic to Early Bronze Age date (4000-1500BC). The implement is traingular in plan and D-shaped in cross-section. It is knapped from a secondary flake with cortex remaining at the distal end of the dorsal surface. There is a prominent bulb of percussion with erailleur scar indicative of hard hammer percussion. At the right medial edge of the dorsal surface is a large notch, with short scaled abrupt retouch. There is also retouch either side of the notch but on the ventral surface, which is more invasive scaled and semi-abrupt, presumable to sha…

A complete flint notched flake of Mesolithic to Early Neolithic date (10000-3500BC). The implement has been knapped from a tertiary flake with no cortex remaining and previous removal scars on the dorsal surface. There is a diffuse bulb of percussion indicative of the soft hammer technique. The ventral surface displays further peripheral flake removals although these are sporadic and most likely through post-depositional processes. At the left medial edge of the dorsal surface is a large notch, with short scaled semi-abrupt retouch within the notch and extending along the edge at th…

A complete double edge side scraper of broad Mesolithic to Middle Neolithic date (10000-2700BC). The scraper is D-shaped in both plan and cross-section and is knapped from a tertiary flake with previous long blade removals from the dorsal surface. It has a prepared striking platform, with a large lip and diffuse bulb of percussion on the ventral surface suggesting soft hammer percussion. There is retouch on both edges, with one edge convex and the opposite concave. The retouch is on alternate faces. Short stepped abrupt retouch on the convex edge is located on the dorsal surface. Flint debitage of broad Mesolithic to Neolithic date (10000-2350BC). This is a tertiary flake with previous removals on the dorsal surface and a lip present at the platform distinctive of soft hammer percussion. However none of the edges show retouch, suggesting this is debitage rather than a lithic implement The flint is an opaque brown grey colour with moderate white inclusions of varying size. The object is 24.07mm in length, 15.09mm wide, 4.69mm thick and weighs 1.72g.
