Medieval ceramic vessel rim sherd. The fabric is an oxidised pale pink orange, possible local ware, with common (25%) poorly sorted angular quartzite and Iron inclusions. There are remnants on the exterior of a light olive green glaze with white slip underneath, there is also evidence of this slip on the interior of the vessel. The colour of the glaze tentatively dates this sherd from 1100-1300. This example is a beaded rim; the vessel diameter is 240mm with the sherd representing 7.5%. The larger vessel diameter suggests a shallow dish form. The sherd is 58.54mm in length, 32.80mm wi…

Medieval wheel thrown Humber Ware (1275-1500) base sherd of a small drinking jug. The fabric is hard fired with a rough feel and moderate sandy and micaceous inclusions. The fabric is a dark blue grey with oxidised orange margins. The base interior displays wheel thrown marks, and a thumb press mark can be seen on the exterior with knife trimming. These small drinking vessels usually have only a few splashes of glaze (Jennings 1992, 29), however this sherd has a light green yellow slip on its exterior and base, worn in places. The sherd is 47.48mm in length, 28.26mm wide, 6.43mm thick…

Medieval York Glazed Ware (1175-1250) handle sherd, most likely from a large decorated jug which is the typical form of this ware (Jennings 1992, 19). The fabric is hard fired with a rough uneven break. The fabric is grey white with moderate poorly sorted sub-angular quartz inclusions. The sherd has a high gloss yellow-green suspension glaze, with incised wavy lines either side and parallel to a central pellet longitudinal decoration. The decoration is dark green, achieved through the inclusion of copper (Brooks 1987, 151). Examples of York Glazed Ware and this decoration can be seen …

Post medieval tile fragment, possibly wall tile rather than floor as it is comparatively very thin (7.13mm). The fabric is hard fired and gritty with a rough feel. The fabric is an oxidised pale pink-orange with very common poorly sorted sub-rounded quartz inclusions. One surface has possible worn polychrome decoration; opaque white background with an uneven repetition of arches constructed of three dark brown parallel lines. A late medieval to early post-medieval (1400-1600) cast copper alloy chafing dish handle, with complete handle and lug. A parallel for the lug is NLM-7C1F83: it is crescent shaped, does not fully envelope the handle, and is rectangular in section: it may have been hammered into shape around the handle. The lug has a stepped end and circular rivet where it would have been attached to the chafing dish. The handle resembles an inverted T with 90 degree corners, and is rectangular in section. It appears to have been bent on one side, causing the metal to break. The entire handle surface i…

Object type: SCRAPER (TOOL)
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: East Riding of Yorkshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A complete knapped lithic implement of Neolithic date (4000-2350BC), scrapers are ubiquitous and cannot be assigned to a tighter date within periods. Smaller defined thumbnail scrapers from small squat like flakes tend to be more characteristic of the Early Bronze Age (2350-1600BC). The implement is a thumbnail scraper knapped from a secondary flake, with a long flake removed from the dorsal face providing a surface for finger placement to hold the scraper. The scraper is D shaped in plan and in section with retouch extending round the distal end and medial edges on the dorsal face. T…

A complete knapped lithic implement of Neolithic date (4000-2350BC). The implement is a side scraper knapped from a secondary flake with cortex remaining on two striking platforms present. It appears an initial larger nodule was created, from which a flake was then knapped. The original nodule platform is the larger cortex area in this instance with the smaller cortex area forming the small platform for the creation of the scraper which is referred to as the proximal end in this instance. The implement is translucent dark grey flint, with some white patches. It is sub-ovate in plan an…

Very worn post-medieval copper-alloy Rose/Orb Jetton of anonymous Nuremberg master. The first Jettons of this type were struck towards the end of the fifteenth century, and borrowed the 'Imperial orb within treasure' design popular on German gold coinage (Mitchiner 1988, 353). This design was popular throughout the sixteenth century (Mitchiner 1988, 377); these Jettons were struck in large numbers and the designs remained in use for the longest period. After an initial evolutionary stage Jettons developed from displaying pellets in the centre, to the distinctive rose design. The ob…

An almost complete Roman cast copper alloy brooch dating from the mid first to second century AD (50-200AD). The brooch has characteristics of the Bow-and-Fantail type (50-150AD), Trumpet Derivative (125-200AD) and Aesica (50-100AD), and cannot be firmly categorised. The brooch is almost complete and is in good condition, with only the pin missing. The brooch has a semi-tubular hinge mechanism, however does not have the attachment loop of comparable trumpet derivative brooches. The bow is rectangular in section and widens into a 'fantail' foot. Toward the head of the brooch is an inte…
