Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An incomplete copper-alloy possible buckle frame of broad medieval date (1100-1500). The object is roughly rectangular with a protruding knop from each of the two corners at one end. The other end displays a worn break. The reverse is smooth, and on the front is a latitudinal ridge to the left hand side with three further protruding equally spaced sub-angular knops running down the right side. There are square cells down the centre of the object body between the knops. Another possible suggestion for the identification of this object is early-medieval wrist clasp (suggestion by Pet…

Object type: WEIGHT
Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: East Riding of Yorkshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A lead-alloy suspension weight of unknown date. The weight is plano-convex with a perforation running through from top to bottom. The perforation is rectangular at the top, and circular at the bottom presumably through wear. The metal is an orange-cream colour and is worn. The weight is 15.63mm in length, 15.39mm wide, 8.04mm thick, and weighs 9.97g. Lead weights such as this were used from the Iron Age through to the Post-Medieval period and are therefore difficult to date without supporting contextual evidence. Suspension weights have a huge range of forms and designs and w…

Object type: TOKEN
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: East Riding of Yorkshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A complete medieval to post-medieval bi-face lead token dating to the period circa AD1300-1800. One side is inscribed with the numerals 52 (Powell type 8). The other side is heavily worn and cannot be attributed to a Powell type. The token has been perforated above the digits, suggesting this is the obverse and the token may have been reused at a later date as a pendant with the reverse worn down over time. The token is also slightly bent, possibly as a result of this perforation. Tokens with simple designs are very easy to make and continued in use for a long period. They have…

Object type: CLOTH SEAL
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: East Riding of Yorkshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An incomplete lead-alloy post-medieval cloth seal (1400-1900AD). All that remains is the folded connecting strip of the cloth seal, the discs are missing. The edges are worn presumably through post-depositional processes suggesting the seal was damaged during use. One half of the strip has two longitudinal grooves most likely wear through use. Cloth seals are cast in one piece, and consist of two discs with a connecting strip. One of the discs has a rivet, and when the strip is folded over this rivet is placed through a corresponding hole on the other disc. The rivet is then bent…

Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A complete lead-alloy bag seal of post medieval date (1700-1900). The seal consists of two flat circular discs connected by three rectangular connecting strips of varying width. The two discs appear identical with only the letters SPR visible on both. The space between the discs would have held wire or textile ligatures to fasten a bag, or several bags together. Lead bag and cloth seals were used between the 13th and 19th centuries as a means of identification and as a component of regulation and quality control. The metal is a grey-cream colour and is smooth on the disc fac…

A complete copper alloy button of post medieval date (1500-1700AD). The button is discoidal with a convex front and convex back. It has a separate embedded drawn copper-alloy wire looped shank. As described by Read (2005) these buttons often have a high tin content or a polished tin coating creating the appearance of silver (98); as is demonstrated by patches on this example. The decoration on the front of the head is worn, it is moulded with small circular hollows, however further features cannot be determined. The metal is a dark brown-grey colour, with patches appearing silver…

A ceramic base sherd of early medieval to Medieval date (850-1300). The sherd is probably either early-medieval Anglo-Scandinavian York ware, or medieval gritty ware which is thought to be a development of the earlier York ware (Mainman and Jenner 2013, p.1178). The fabric is hard fired and coarse with an uneven fracture. It is dark grey at the core and a paler grey-buff on the interior surface. The fabric has moderate poorly sorted quartz, and rare micaceous inclusions. The vessel fragment has a pale inner surface similar to early medieval examples on the database such as YORYM-…

A complete knapped lithic implement of Neolithic to Early Bronze Age date (4000 - 1600BC). The tool is knapped from a tertiary flake with a prominent waves on the ventral face and a small lip at the proximal end, suggestive of hard hammer percussion. There are further large flake removal scars on the dorsal surface which forms a possible piercing point at the distal end. The left medial edge of the dorsal face forms a curve and has further short stepped semi-abrupt retouch creating a scraping edge. The flint is an opaque dark brown grey, with occasional large white patches. The i…

An incomplete whetstone or hone of unknown date. The stone is rectangular in plan and cross-section. One end is rounded with a slightly off-centre circular suspension hole 10.14 mm from the edge. The other end is missing, with a rough worn and uneven break. The other surfaces are smooth, although there are some deep cut marks near the break. Whetstones such as this were probably used for re-sharpening blades of knives, scythes, axes and other tools. Whetstones are known from the Roman period onwards, however without decoration or context it is difficult to assign a defined date r…

A lead-alloy suspension weight of uncertain date. The weight is cotton reel shaped - circular in cross-section with a narrowed waist. The metal is worn with indentations and heavy wear to the outer edges. The narrower waist was probably used as the method of suspension. The metal is a light grey-white colour with a powdery feel. A complete flint side scraper of late Neolithic to Early Bronze Age date 3000-1500BC. The scraper has been knapped from a secondary flake with some cortex remaining near the striking platform and on the left edge of the dorsal surface. A large flake has also been removed from the dorsal surface which provides an area for finger placement to use the tool as a side scraper. The ventral surface displays a large prominent bulb of percussion and erailleur scar suggesting the hard hammer technique was used. The retouch is relative crude, with abrupt short stepped retouch at the distal edge,…

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Flint debitage of broad Neolithic to Early Bronze Age date (4000-1600BC). This is a tertiary flake with previous removals on the dorsal surface. There is a diffuse bulb of percussion suggesting the soft hammer removal technique. However none of the edges show retouch, suggesting this is debitage rather than a lithic implement. The flint is an opaque brown grey colour, with moderate small white patches. The object is 20.83mm in length, 16.74mm wide, 3.91mm thick and weighs 1.44g.
