A lead-alloy suspension weight of unknown date. The weight is plano-convex with a perforation running through from top to bottom. The perforation is rectangular at the top, and circular at the bottom presumably through wear. The metal is an orange-cream colour and is worn. The weight is 15.63mm in length, 15.39mm wide, 8.04mm thick, and weighs 9.97g. Lead weights such as this were used from the Iron Age through to the Post-Medieval period and are therefore difficult to date without supporting contextual evidence. Object type: TOKEN
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A complete medieval to post-medieval bi-face lead token dating to the period circa AD1300-1800. One side is inscribed with the numerals 52 (Powell type 8). The other side is heavily worn and cannot be attributed to a Powell type. The token has been perforated above the digits, suggesting this is the obverse and the token may have been reused at a later date as a pendant with the reverse worn down over time. The token is also slightly bent, possibly as a result of this perforation. Tokens with simple designs are very easy to make and continued in use for a long period. They have…

County: East Riding of Yorkshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An incomplete lead-alloy post-medieval cloth seal (1400-1900AD). All that remains is the folded connecting strip of the cloth seal, the discs are missing. The edges are worn presumably through post-depositional processes suggesting the seal was damaged during use. One half of the strip has two longitudinal grooves most likely wear through use. Cloth seals are cast in one piece, and consist of two discs with a connecting strip. One of the discs has a rivet, and when the strip is folded over this rivet is placed through a corresponding hole on the other disc. The rivet is then bent…

A complete lead-alloy bag seal of post medieval date (1700-1900). The seal consists of two flat circular discs connected by three rectangular connecting strips of varying width. The two discs appear identical with only the letters SPR visible on both. The space between the discs would have held wire or textile ligatures to fasten a bag, or several bags together. Lead bag and cloth seals were used between the 13th and 19th centuries as a means of identification and as a component of regulation and quality control. The metal is a grey-cream colour and is smooth on the disc fac…
