An incomplete copper-alloy possible buckle frame of broad medieval date (1100-1500). The object is roughly rectangular with a protruding knop from each of the two corners at one end. The other end displays a worn break. The reverse is smooth, and on the front is a latitudinal ridge to the left hand side with three further protruding equally spaced sub-angular knops running down the right side. There are square cells down the centre of the object body between the knops. Another possible suggestion for the identification of this object is early-medieval wrist clasp (suggestion by Pet…

A ceramic base sherd of early medieval to Medieval date (850-1300). The sherd is probably either early-medieval Anglo-Scandinavian York ware, or medieval gritty ware which is thought to be a development of the earlier York ware (Mainman and Jenner 2013, p.1178). The fabric is hard fired and coarse with an uneven fracture. It is dark grey at the core and a paler grey-buff on the interior surface. The fabric has moderate poorly sorted quartz, and rare micaceous inclusions. The vessel fragment has a pale inner surface similar to early medieval examples on the database such as YORYM-…

Medieval Humber ware (1275-1500) base sherd of a large jug. The fabric is hard fired, a red-orange with reduced dark grey core and interior margin. The fabric is gritty with common sandy and micaceous inclusions. There is no remaining glaze, however Mainman and Jenner state that Humber ware glazes were partial and mainly limited to the rim, neck and upper body (2013, p.1278). The sherd is 103.11mm in length, 45.92mm wide, 10.06mm thick, and weighs 112g. The vessel base has a diameter of 240mm, with 13% of the base present. The form of this jug would have been similar to those …

Medieval Brandsby-type ware (1275-1400AD) body sherd. The fabric is pale grey with a cream-white outer margin and dark grey inner surface. Fine sandy fabric with moderate sub-angular poorly-sorted quartz inclusions and rare rounded dark grey inclusions. The sherd has a worn suspension glaze on the outer surface, varying from dark to light green. York Glazed ware was replaced by Brandsby-type ware, with the fabric of the latter finer and sandier. Brandsby-type ware fabrics often have a grey core and internal surface as this example demonstrates, along with a light coloured externa…

An incomplete copper-alloy pot leg from a cooking vessel of medieval to post-medieval date (1100-1800AD). The leg has D-shaped cross-section, with the inner surface flat. The outer surface has two high raised parallel ridges running longitudionally down the centre. It is unclear if this example had a foot, as the bottom end of the remaining piece is extremely worn and it is difficult to distinguish if this is a break. It is therefore not possible to establish if this belongs to a vessel of an earlier or later date (later vessels had legs without feet). The top of the leg is intact whe…

The leg has a rectangular cross-section, with a raised ridge running longitudinally down the centre of the outer surface. The leg then extends forming a square foot with a right angled triangular cross section. This type of leg most closely matches an early form posnet as illustrated in Butler, Green and Payne (2009 p.2). The metal light green patina with patches of black corrosion. The fragment is 67.22mm in length, 33.50mm wide, 15.33mm thick and weighs 131g. Copper alloy vessels were commonly used for cooking from A…

An incomplete copper-alloy L-shaped angular lug handle from a cooking vessel of medieval to post medieval date (1100-1800AD). The fragment is hexagonal in cross-section. The break of one end of the handle is near the 90 degree of the L shape. The other arm of the handle is longer with the break most likely where it joined the vessel body; near this break are three worn parallel ridges on one side of the handle. This handle is similar to that illustrated and described by Butler, Green and Payne (2009 p.2 & p. 4) as an angular lug handle for a cauldron. The metal is a red-brown colou…

An incomplete copper-alloy probable leg from a cooking vessel of medieval to post-medieval date (1100-1800AD). This is most likely the upper half of the leg, with a flat surface where the leg most likely joined the body of a cooking vessel. The break is worn and the foot is missing. The exterior of the leg is ribbed (two ribs) suggesting it was part of a cauldron. The sub-trapezoidal cross-section of the leg also suggests this. This would have been one of three legs on the cooking vessel (Butler, Green and Payne 2009). The metal is very rough and pitted. It is a red-brown colour …

The foot protrudes and then tapers downwards towards a point; it consists of four conjoined convex ribs running from the leg to this point. A rim fragment of a copper-alloy cooking vessel of medieval to post-medieval date (1100-1800AD). This is an out-turned rim with two ridges present. The rim fragment represents 11% of a 190mm diameter cooking vessel, most likely a small cauldron or a posnet (Butler, Green and Payne 2009, p.2-3). The breaks are very worn and the surface is rough and slightly pitted with a light green patina. There are patches of black corrosion as a result of depositional circumstances. The fragment is 59.33mm in length, 26.39mm wide, 10.51mm thick and weighs 76g. Copper alloy vessels were commonl…

At one end the shank tapers inwards slightly towards a very worn break where a round or lozenge bow would have been present, which is now missing. The collar remains consisting of two parallel moulded ridges around the shank. The shank is circular in cross-section, with a smooth exterior and a hollow interior open at the bit end. A copper-alloy vessel body fragment of medieval to post-medieval date (1200-1600AD). The fragment is from a large, possible cooking vessel however no further diagnostic features remain. The fragment has a smooth interior and a rough slightly pitted exterior. The breaks are very worn through post-depositional process suggesting the vessel was broken prior to deposition. Cast cooking vessels seem to have come into use in the second half of the 13th century and to have continued at least until c.1600 (Geake 2001, p.52).
